Each movie great in its own right, but not as memorable had he not been cast. More than a few of these were Oscar winning films, and it’s a crime he wasn’t nominated for The Conversation (It won the Oscar for Best Picture). Bonnie and Clyde - Buck Barrow (Oscar Nominated) The French Connection - Popeye Doyle (Best Actor Oscar Winner) The Conversation - Harry Caul Young Frankenstein - Blind Man Night Moves - Harry Moseby Superman - Lex Luthor Hoosiers - Coach Norman Dale No Way Out - David Brice Mississippi Burning - Agent Anderson (Oscar Nominated) Unforgiven - Little Bill Daggett (Supporting Actor Oscar Winner) The Quick and the Dead - Herod Crimson Tide - Ramsey Get Shorty - Harry Zimm The Birdcage - Senator Keely The Royal Tenenbaums - Royal Tenenbaum So yes, there are 15 on my list, but believe me I could have listed 15 more. There are quite a few late political thrillers and Action films I love him in. And the Oscars should have nominated him for The Birdcage and The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Conversation as I mentioned. As you go through his work, what really sticks out is how generous an actor he was, starring in so many films with other actors whose performances he elevated just by his presence. At 95, he is in my mind the greatest living actor. Period.
