Star Trek III: The Search for Spock Watch Along

I love these Star Trek Movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excuse my Star Wars Star Trek timeline blunders :)

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock Watch Along

Comments

Just commenting as I watch. Did you notice Yeoman Rand from TOS in the lounge when the ship pulled in to spacedock? Did you notice that Kirk read the same summary as Dr. Marcus did in the previous message? I suppose that's so they didn't have to pay her for it. Not-So-Fun fact: I was shortchanged on my education. When they taught us about Canada, they said it was just like the US, but that EVERYONE in Canada spoke English AND French. It snows in Arizona where there are cactus.

Confining my answer to ST3 and earlier, Leonard Nimoy wanted to kill off his Spock character to provide an end to his character arc. He felt like he had been typecast and as creatively frustrated by the 1st movie. Leonard Nimoy even wrote two autobiographies, "I Am Not Spock," and later, "I Am Spock." Although the first book sounds like a repudiation of his Spock character, it was actually intended as a clarification that he and Spock are not the same person (who knew). But, the title alone gave the perception that this was an outright rejection of his character -- which it was not. "I Am Spock" was written in a response to the controversy of the first in which he further clarifies (and embraces) his relationship with Spock. Working on ST2 (directed by Nicolas Meyer and mostly ghost re-written by him as well), he was re-energized and wanted to return. The scenes at the end of ST2 ("Remember" and the torpedo case on the grass in Golden Gate Park were added after this). Nicolas Meyer declined to return for ST3 because he felt that resurrecting Spock undermined the emotional impact of his death as well as the poignant farewell he got at the end of ST2. (He also didn't return because he didn't want to be perceived as specializing only in Star Trek.) One of the key features of Leonard Nimoy's contract for ST3 and beyond was the "Most Favored Nation" clause in which William Shatner and he get the same pay and opportunities. ---- Bonus: Both Nimoy and Shatner had music albums. Both are on available on YT Music and , I presume, on other platforms as well. It's easy to find copies on YT for example. *Nimoy: Mr. Spock's Music from Outer Space (1967) *Shatner: The Transformed Man (1968)

Spoiler alert: they search for Spock 😉 This is a very underrated movie and deserves better.

Star trek 3 is my third favorite star trek film. I will die on that hill.

Oh, and I believe judging by the handle the thing the Excelsior captain was holding was a futuristic riding crop.

Part 4 soon please this is a patron making an executive order… don’t make me sabotage an Excelsior over this.🥸

❤️🖖🏽❤️🖖🏽 thanks for this John! You make good points about Kruge! But I am sticking to my opinion Hahhaha! I can’t get Kirstie ALLEYs name right cause I don’t know her but I spat out my tea laughing because you said “INEXCUSABLE” and I wholeheartedly agree even thou the replacement did well. I think I said out loud just KILL HER not David LOL… but correct. A big price to pay. I didn’t like that they did that. It was maybe a must for KIRK moving forward with his ever evolving story arc. William Shatner a phenomenal actor.

It was great fun to re-watch this one with you, Ames!! "3 for 3" is right! Don't worry about what anyone else thinks! Just continue to enjoy these movies for what they are!! *** SPOILERS *** I thought the plot device to use the Genesis effect to resurrect Spock and have him rapidly age as the planet was aging was very clever. Although I think Robin Curtis did a fine job as Lieutenant Saavic, it was INEXCUSABLE that Kirstie Alley didn't continue in that role, especially over something as ridiculous as a dispute over money! (There are 100 ways to resolve such issues. Someone's ego must have been involved. So stupid!) I thought Christopher Lloyd did a good job as Klingon Commander Kruge (although the Klingon dog was ridiculous). I wouldn't necessarily agree that Kruge was an "easy" adversary (perhaps so compared to Kahn, but perhaps not). First he destroys the USS Grissom and its crew, then he damages the Enterprise sufficiently to force them to auto-destruct, then he kills David. Two starships plus Kirk's son is a pretty high price to pay! I always love the scenes on the Vulcan home world! All of the traditions and ceremonies from ages past! The Vulcan High Priestess T'Lar was played by renowned Australian stage actress, Dame Judith Anderson. So cool!! I also loved the Vulcan color palette and costuming! I thought Leonard Nimoy's performance was perfect! You could see him struggling to remember each member of the Enterprise crew, then finally, "Your name... is Jim". So good!! I can't wait for Star Trek IV!!!

John Courtright

Have you insulted a Klingon Targ, you petaQ!!!??? 🤓

All I remember thinking when this came out was, I'll get behind whatever they come up with as long as Spock is resurrected. Then they went and actually delivered a decent movie with some real emotional heft. Could have done without the cheesy alien dog though. Looking forward to Star Trek 4.

James Rogers

Yes took me a sec to remember him 😂😂😂 memory of a sieve

Amalia Wolf

I'm you remember back to TOS the episode Balance of Terror, Mark Lenard (Sarek) played the Romulan Captain. I much love this version of the Klingons than the TOS version (tribbles)

I adore this film! However, I do not like the recasting of Kirstie Alley's Saavic. Nothing against the other actress, but she played Saavic as a generic Vulcan, where I feel Kirstie Alley in Star Trek 2 gave Saavic much more character. Regardless, love this movie and looking forward to watching your reaction tonight!

I’m sorry I keep commenting and I’m not going to spoil for others, but the huge emotional moment a little over an hour in resonates in a highly impactful way in Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country. In fact, 6 was basically built around that one moment.

Catchermag

Nice takes as usual JM! IM SO EXCITED for 4 I best watch it sooner than later to avoid any issues LOL

Amalia Wolf

This one was always known among fans as "the best of the odd Treks." I think it's great, esp. considering the budget ($18 million in 1983, around $50 million today). I agree that Kirstie Alley was amazing in Wrath of Khan (she always has this fiery look in her eyes), but I think Robin Curtis gets unfairly dissed by the fans. My head canon take -- in ST III, Saavik re-commits herself to prioritize calmness and logic after the events of Wrath of Khan. At any rate, Robin Curtis did a great job in a difficult situation. Looking forward to Star Trek 4! No spoilers, please!!! 😄🖖(Just consider how rare it is for a reactor to go into ST IV cold.) Can't wait!

I FRIGGEN LOVED IT

Amalia Wolf

Like how I can’t get her name right 😂😂😂

Amalia Wolf

Kirstie Alley wanted more money, they wanted to pay her less than the first one, she was recast. That’s pretty much it.

Catchermag

Watching now. There are so many things about this one to love. It’s unfairly judged IMO. Chris Lloyd chews up the scenery, and the rest is *spoilers*. Honestly I think this one belongs with 2 and 4 as a perfect Trilogy.

Catchermag

HAHAHA!

Amalia Wolf

YAY but don’t u have A game to watch soon?

Amalia Wolf

Running to the kitchen to pop the popcorn in the microwave! 🏃Hurry hurry
