Rear Window Watch Along

I LOVED THIS! I left it all in the reaction!!

I always leave my studio door open when I am alone so Jedi can came in as he wishes but my husband came home earlier than expected so I was trying to text him to shut the door before he walked into my reaction HAHAH! I almost had an unintentional Live Guest! But - The show must go on! I wish I made a funny movie related Joke after he shut the door... damn it.

drop it all in the comments LETS TALK!

Rear Window Watch Along

Great recap Clay!!!!!I haven’t seen disturbia

This is only my third time to watch Rear Window. The first was a decade or two ago, which I really don't remember. The second was last year. The third was along with your reaction. I liked your intro and outro. Also, good reaction during the movie. You seemed to get into the movie. Like you, I find the movie engaging. Feel part of the experience and as if I share the perspective of Jeff (and Lisa) (and Stella). I like the interaction (including dialogue) beween the characters and the depiction of the various lives. Of course, Grace Kelly is gorgeous -- all around nice/pleasant. Jimmy Stewart still has charisma, even in that role. I don't view him as a creepy Peeping Tom, but more of consequence of the situation. I guess that Rear Window is where Disturbia (and other similar modern movies) got the idea.

As you noted, Jeff's broken leg is a symbol of his impotence in the sense of not being able to move around or do anything for himself. You could take the metaphor even further -- it's a long, protruding part of his body that is literally broken. (So what does Jeff do to re-assert his virility over his helplessness? Naturally, he whips out his massive telephoto lens.) And even though it doesn't happen 100% of the time, the scenes in the windows sometimes serve as "windows" into Jeff's mental state and concerns. When Stella is trying to persuade Jeff of the benefits of marriage, his perspective shifts to the happy newlyweds. Later, after his big argument with Lisa (and while considering the prospect of breaking up with her), he notices Miss Lonelyheart and the possible future that awaits him. (I'm sure there are other examples as well.) Eagerly awaiting the bottom half of the Hitchcock doubleheader (and more discussion)! What a week!

When asked about realism in film, Hitchcock once said, "Some films are slices of life, mine are slices of cake." And Rear Window might be the sweetest and richest slice of cake of them all! I don't have much to add (for now) to what everyone else has said. There's so much to enjoy here: the mystery, the set, the costumes, performances, camerawork, music -- all fantastic. (Are you familiar with Edith Head's career? She won 8 Oscars for costume design, and her name will come up over and over again in classic film credits.) And the witty (and risque) banter is perfectly delivered by the great trio of Kelly, Stewart, and Thelma Ritter. (Wouldn't you like to see a spin-off film about the wild adventures of an insurance nurse?) (MILD SPOILERS)
