Shutter Island (2010) Watch Along

Hi everyone!

SPOILERS BELOW

This movie is super well done, but I still felt something was missing in the end which I still can’t put my finger on it. The end reveal is horrific, yet I felt like I knew it was coming. So maybe I wanted more of a “slap” in your face maybe never saw that one coming. The double twist was ok - yet sad. All this being said over all I still think it was so well done, intricate storyline and hidden messages layered over top of one another and the water motif. Outstanding performances, great time piece with amazing costumes hair and makeup. A wonderful tense atmosphere and colour palette in an eerie AF Alcatraz like setting.

Let me know your thoughts please down below!

its interseting hearing everyones comments. I think this is a great concept. And its executed so well. Maybe he just over did it all. I also love thinking like that as well.. like questioning everyone at the hospitals morals etc because I believe thats what helps you buy in to the movie and story if those things are thought out. Out of those I have only seen WOWS

Yeah I agree, not one of Scorsese's best. He likes to put a lot on his plate with his films, but a lot of it in here is just filler which takes away from the punch of the ending (which you really need for a psych thriller). I still enjoy this film a lot and love rewatching it, but the excess in this one just doesn't compliment the story like it does in Goodfellas or The Departed. But I mean how can you turn away a DiCaprio/Scorsese film, I'd watch a D/S film about a guy that watches paint dry! 🤣🤣

Shutter Island, in my opinion, is easily one of Scorsese's weakest film. Though he was able to get a lot of mileage out of it, the story to me is just really weak and silly. Like, for instance, how does every staff member on Shutter Island not just quit after hearing they have to participate in this murder mystery bullshit? They work in a mental hospital that for some reason was built on a cold and dreary island. They probably have little to no communication with their friends and family. Life on Shutter Island is stressful enough without having to pretend to be part of a murder investigation with a dangerous mental patient. Aren’t there union regulations that prevent them from having to participate in fake murder mysteries?! If I worked at Shutter Island, I’d hand in my resignation letter and be like “Yo, they didn’t teach us how to pretend to be a murder suspect at no nursing school! I’m sending my ass to Orlando!” Seriously, though, Scorsese followed up Shutter Island with Hugo (which is fine), and then followed that up with Wolf of Wall Street, Silence, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon - four complete bangers that are unparalleled amongst senior citizen directors. Silence and KOTFM, in particular, are films that I would rank in my personal Scorsese Top 5 along with Goodfellas and Taxi Driver. Old Scorsese is just as good as the Young Scorsese in my book.
