Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Watch Along

Comments

Great watch! ST:II and ST:IV are my favorites but I'm gonna watch three just because. I'm late to the party so I'm sure it's been said already, but Chekov wasn't in the original episode with Khan. It's a continuity error that we have to live with. Cheers

Natas Krad

I always enjoy rewatching this. Ames, others I sub to use a Synch timer. It would be helpful. Love your content nonetheless.

Soo good spooks! How ya been!

Amalia Wolf

I dunno how I feel about it. Not to go all feminist on ya but I would prefer no title and just last names! IMHO that s’more gender equality to me ad MR is still β€œmale”

Amalia Wolf

Good to know!

Amalia Wolf

HAHAHA!!! I swear it’s fake!

Amalia Wolf

Great reaction Ames, really enjoyed it. Love me some Trek. And you are not the first female reactor to gasp at Khans bare chest reveal. 🀣

I haven't read a lot of Star Trek books, but The Eugenics Wars series was fantastic. It features Gary Seven and most importantly Khan's backstory from Earth. It's 2 books. I seem to maybe remember a 3rd coming out much later, but I never read it.

So from poking around on Reddit, it seems that it's an old naval tradition that senior officers can refer to junior officers as "mister" as a sign of affection (Picard does this a lot on TNG), regardless of gender. (I have no idea if this is true.) It could also be seen as a sign of gender equality in the future -- everyone is addressed in the same way, regardless of gender. Anyway, I think "Mister Saavik" sounds cooler than "Ms. Saavik".

It's always great spotting actors in early roles, and definitely when you spot actors you know primarily from TV. I saw DeForest Kelley in something recently, can't remember what it was, but he was loving up on some gal, I thought to myself "Look at Bones! Haven't seen him this randy since the 'Shore Leave' episode! 🀣

Toc

For me, there is only the blue, the red, and the yellow! I also don't think they ever bettered the transporter effect than the original TV series. People turning into a UHF signal! 🀣

Toc

Wrath of Khan.... Now this is some good ole fashion scifi fun!

Spooky Dooky

"Are you out of your Vulcan mind?"

Toc

I know. The bastards. And they pull every stock trick in the book, like you can spot it coming a mile away, ok, cue the music....every formula trick they could pull out of the hat, they used. And it still gets us, those bastards. Look at Ames! She knew what was coming! She was practically joking about it....until she wasn't! πŸ€£πŸ˜πŸ˜„ Playing "Amazing Grace" at a Vulcan funeral. How dare they! I understand your hate, Stephen!

Toc

Yeah. She knows it's called Star Trek III. In a perfect world, it should really be called Star Trek II, lol. (just kidding ST-TMP fans! just goofing, just making ha-ha!.πŸ˜„)

Toc

Totally agree. I can totally goof on Shatner as much as anybody alive, but this movie is his greatest moment. That eulogy scene. They must have done that a million times to get the right catch in his voice. And Montablan is great, he must have relished doing something other than "Fantasy Island" in 1982! I was happy some actors got to do more (like Chekhov and Scotty). I never knew there was a Star Trek vs. Star Wars thing! I can see that happening, especially now that both of them have 10,000 movies and spinoff series. What's the beef? Probably science vs. fantasy, right? I will say that I saw Star Wars the day it opened in 1977, and I immediately associated it with watching Star Trek every night in syndication. I remember, like an arrow in the head, thinking the canteen sequence looked like a Star Trek episode, like "Journey To Babel". Not as a diss, just noticing it. Plus white ships, warp speed, alien planets.....etc etc. (There was "Space: 1999" on TV as well. )

Toc

Great info!

Shatner takes a lot of heat for his acting style, but he absolutely shines in this one. And of course Ricardo Montalban is brilliant as Khan. Very much the Captain Ahab to Kirk's white whale. This is such a great movie. It ushered in kind of a new era for Trek, and I think started the whole Star Wars vs Star Trek debate. I was 8yo when it came out, and Spock's death traumatized me. Yes the odd numbered movies are weaker than the even ones, but don't let that stop you. They're still very worth watching.

Marty McGee

No spoilers... but.. does she know the title of Star Trek 3?

David Crabtree

I recently finished listening to two audio books: Star Trek the first 25 years and Star Trek the next 25 years which are told 95% thru direct quotes of the people involved. Here are some tidbits: After being unhappy with Star Trek 1 Nimoy was not inclined to return but when told that he would be killed he returned. He had such a great time with this movie that he ended up regretting his death. The ambiguous ending showing Spock's torpedo / coffin was not part of the original ending but test audiences felt the ending was to much of a downer and so it was added. The director did not want this new ending but had no choice but to include it. Gene Roddenberry did not want Spock to die so he leaked his copy of the script to the fans to attempt to foil it. Because all the scripts were coded by person the studio knew it was Gene's script that was leaked. This forced the writers to create that training mission at the start where all the crew "died" to fool the audience into thinking that was the intended death. Actually Spock's death came much earlier in the original draft and Gene's leak resulted in a far better death for Spock at the end saving the ship. Finally the director could be considered a savior of Star Trek not just because he directed what is regarded by most fans as the best TOS movie but because the script was a complete mess. He rewrote it into the movie we have today without taking a writing credit for it. A second fan regarded mediocre Trek movie might have ended the franchise.

The late, great Kirstie Alley was 30 when she filmed Star Trek 2.

David Crabtree

I've lost track of how many times I've watched this movie. Really glad you enjoyed it. I may have mentioned it before but if you want to see a young DeForest Kelley playing a gunslinger cowboy you should watch the Henry Fonda movie Warlock. It also has Anthony Quinn and Richard Widmark. Great movie and Kelley plays a totally different character

Roger Freeman

Opinions vary, but I like the new Starfleet uniforms! For the original series, Rodenberry was very much against a military look and wanted the uniforms to reflect a peaceful and exploratory tone. But I take the new uniforms to reflect a new phase of Starfleet where it's facing new external threats, and the uniforms have changed accordingly. (In reality, to save money the unis were the same ones from ST:TMP, just dyed and with some added buckles and flaps. The budget for Wrath of Khan was only $12 million in 1981, or approximately $50 million in today's money. Pretty amazing production considering the cost! The budget for TMP was $44 million.) Nicholas Meyer not only directed Wrath of Khan, he also rewrote the screenplay. He watched all the original episodes, decided on Space Seed to build the story, and did a massive script doctoring job in 2 weeks. (He didn't accept a writing credit b/c of some weird rules about not being a member of the screenwriters' guild.) Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you can avoid spoilers for the next two, which make up a kind of loose trilogy with Wrath of Khan!

β€œFor everything there is a first time”….dont now how many times I’ve quoted Spock on this in the last 30 years….

RFK Fan

Can never watch this too many times. Not sure if it's my absolute favorite. Maybe a 1A or 1B but this one is spectacular. How many of those one liners are you going to start using. Always loved "sauce for the goose"

Bubba Fett

I love this movie but hate it at the same time. I've seen it at least a dozen times and I still cry like a baby at the end.

Stephen Knueppel

I always cry at this and It's a Wonderful Life, haha. And I'm also a fan of the third one.

JM63

"Thanks, Spocky-boo!" 🀣 That was great! You said it best at the end: it's elevated into a real movie.....but keeps all the things that were great from the TV series. Totally agree. And I particularly love Shatner's performance and Ricardo Monablan's. You were right: two very strong personalities, really anchors the movie. Hey.....you're watching Seinfeld! There are at least two references to this in that show that you'll get now! Also, now when you watch Kill Bill Vol. 1, you'll understand the very first thing that's shown on the screen: it's a quote from this movie!!!! The whole audience cracked up in the theatre when that quote hit the screen!

Toc

I just watched this so I could cry along with someone else at the funeral scene lol. That happens no matter how many times I watch this. Also, I love the third one.

Catchermag

Omg Aaron that is sooooo heartbreaking and sweet

Amalia Wolf

OH THANKS JM! hahahha I even followed all ur notes u gave me LOL

Amalia Wolf

Ames' ST episode reactions are great! I would at least watch Space Seed and Amok Time before the movies.

JM63

FYI everyone -- This is actually the THEATRICAL CUT, not the director's cut! For some reason Amazon Prime Canada mislabeled it, but I can tell from the blurred box that it's the theatrical (in the birthday scene with Kirk and McCoy). The DC won't line up perfectly with Ames' commentary. (I think from a storytelling POV, the theatrical cut is actually better. The DC fleshes out some details, but it gives away a little too much in a couple scenes for a first watch. So this worked out well, I think.)

JM63

Thanks for another great week of content. Trying to decide if I want to go down the Star Treck rabbit hole...so much to watch!

AJ

One of my earliest memories is crying over this movie and then pressing rewind because my 5-year old brain convinced myself that it didn't happen. Watch it again and watch it right this time. And then I cried again.
