Displaced Hero - Chapters 75-78

Whew! Was a little bit tight getting this one done on time! I ended up doing more research than usual with this set of chapters, as they jump around between a lot of perspectives. In fact, Izuku and Aayla actually barely feature at all, only showing up in the latter half of chapters 78. That won't be normal, hopefully, but with the butterfly effect starting to really snowball into major changes, some additional perspectives are required to show how that is happening.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the chapters. The batch is ever-so-slightly smaller than normal, but only about 500 words short of the typical 15,000, so it's not by much. Meanwhile, it crams a lot into the what is there. Everything from the first Mei perspective in a long while, to the first-ever Dooku perspective. We get another fairly major fleet battle, some engineering bits, and the reveal of a big thing that's been foreshadow for, like, half the fic it seems like.

For reference, the two images aren't mine (I believe they are AI generations). But they are good references for what the Hero and Sidekick fighters mentioned in chapter 77 look like. With the red-black being the manned Hero fighter and the yellow-black being the Droid-controlled Sidekick.

As always, the new bits of story are attached here in various formats, and I'll be updating the Master Files in the Pinned Post shortly. There will also be a fair few Author's Notes in the comments, once I have some time to write them up! Enjoy more of Displaced Hero!

The Foreign Traveler

Haven't even read anything yet and just wanted to say that the Hero fighter image is amazing. Love it.

Regrettably, not mentioning distance measurements in a space battle is the next best thing to impossible.

Novus Peregrine

Right, thanks for the detailed explanation :D now that you say it, I remember just ignoring distance measurements when reading star wars fics to keep my sanity xD might actually be simpler for everyone to not mention specific values at all. But it's still one of my all time favorite fics, so you're doing a great job here.

Unfortunately, this one is not my fault. I WISH the engagement ranges in Star Wars made sense. But the don't. Here, I'll copy over something I put on Questionable Questing when someone said the same thing: "Unfortunately, those ranges are canon in both Canon and Legends alike. That's literally the established ranges for combat in Star Wars. Fighter weapons max out at 2.5km for missile with lock on, or 14k total without lock on, 250-750m for blasters. Capital ships don't hit the edge of their weapons envelop until right at a fighter's maximum missile range, so 1-15km for even capital ship guns. Exception only for Turobolasers, which are a special category of two-stage guns that only larger ships have. Even after extensive research in Imperial era, however, Turbolasers maxed out at 30-40km for HEAVY emplacements on REALLY big ships. Honestly? Their ships might as well be humping each other in space, yet the only times ranges are mentioned that's the sort of figure given. It drives me nuts, since it makes no sense whatsoever. That's not even knife righting range, for the fighters. It's stick-the-gun-up-their-asshole-before-firing range >_<. Sadly, unless I want to completely upend established figures for Star Wars combat and rewrite the whole book entirely, it's what I'm stuck with. So blame the irritatingly short ranges on the Star Wars writers, not me >_<. As for the particle accelerators, the range thing is exactly why I introduced them. It will be revealed shortly (NOTE: As in, this release, where I gave the station ranges. That hadn't happened yet when I wrote the QQ post) that they have considerably longer range than anything else currently mounted and used within Star Wars. That said, in order to not make them too overpowered, I had to keep the range increase reasonable. Essentially, the only way I've been able to make the Star Wars combat ranges make any sort of sense at all is to take a single piece of information we have about missiles/torpedoes and run with it. It's established in Legends at least that even Star Fighter Missiles actually have a range capacity of roughly 10-14km, not the 2.5km distance that is their max lock-on range. Sensor systems simply can't establish a lock from farther out than roughly 2.5km. To me, what this says is that the reason for all the short engagement ranges within Star Wars is that everyone has incredibly good ECCM. That their electronic countermeasure systems are nearly better than their targeting systems, making it really hard to get a weapons lock outside almost point-blank ranges (unless you're shooting at a planet or something). This, combined with the utterly dumbass choice of plasma weapons as their main armament (energy fall off as the electromagnetic shell holding the plasma together comes undone quickly and the plasma scatters) are the only way I can make sense of the engagement ranges given for Star Wars ships. I'm basically operating on the idea that the primary limiter is normally determined by Sensors versus ECCM suites. With Particle Weapons being a near-lightspeed beam, I figure they can partially ignore this by simple high-speed visual targeting. An overclocked, specialized droid brain adjusting the beam in picoseconds to get the shot on-target based purely on visual data. Reverting to purely optical data as a way to overcome electronic warfare scrambling. That puts a bit of a practical limit on effective targeting range, but it's still much farther than the gun-barrel-up-their-ass-before-firing that everything else is using >_<."

Hiya Novus, first things first: thanks for four awesome chapters. I really liked the battle part, though I think that you need to rework the distances involved, as 55km range in space is basically knife range, especially if you're talking about an odp that can't participate because it can't get around the planet fast enough. You could probably simply use lightseconds (the distance light travels in one second) as a measure for long distance engagements, with 20ls being much more realistic than 20km. This is scifi, we have guns today that range more than 20km :D

...I could totally see Mei actually making a pamphlet like that and mailing them to the Jedi Order, complete with a holovid of the Orbital Drop and a mail order form. I'm seriously tempted to make an omake at some point where another Jedi solves a problem with one, and explains he got the Orbital Drop Pod via mail order from 'some crazy woman who mass mailed us a pamphlet and I was curious.'

Novus Peregrine

*snort* That gave me a mental image of The Daughter on Mortis dressed up in rocker girl clothes fist pumping and shouting that. While her confused and slightly scared brother looks on and worries that she's maybe going to steal his spot as the 'crazy one'...

Novus Peregrine

:-p. It's more that she makes ONE baby and then hands it off to be cloned by someone else, because raising more than one of the same kind is boring ;-).

Novus Peregrine

Mace should have received a pamphlet from Orbital Inc. "Need your force users in a hurry? We'll precisely deliver them planet side in bulk at Mach F***!" Just read the author's notes. Kinda just assumed Mei was working on portals in the background ever since she got the Kwa download. Thought you would bring it back up in the story when it was time/important. Thanks for the chapter, now time to wait for the next ones.

Impes

I like to imagine that the Forces' "victory cry" mentioned as the veil started warping and ripping was "Get rekt palpatine"

Mr Fox

"His Boringness was perfect for handling little details like where to put the toilets on her awesome Ships of Extra Doom! Not to mention for managing all the numbers and budgets, and other such boring and nonsensical things needed to get her designs into mass production. Once she had done all the hard parts of making Awesome Babies, it was nice to be able to hand them off to others to worry about making more of them." So she makes the babies and then leaves him potty train them? Mei is such an irresponsible mother.

Chapter 78 A/N 1: So, we're starting to see the League genuinely under pressure. For reference? If Admiral Lin hadn't shifted the Paladin there, they would have outright lost Nar Haaska. I've said from the start that their Crusade isn't going to be entirely one-sided. The Hutts are starting to get back on balance, which is going to mean additional victories will be much harder...and they might outright lose a few battles or systems here and there. A/N 2: Alright! This is a big one! So, I HOPE I've done a good job of weaving in all the breadcrumbs from, oh, the last 50+ chapters. From the start, one of the things I wanted to have happen was a new order of Force Users to come together. HOWEVER, I hate it when other authors make that just...spontaneously happen at the drop of a hat. So I laboriously created the building blocks and circumstances for this starting clear back around chapter 19-20. All along the path they've taken, slowly but certainly, the right people wove into the right places. Ood Bnar and his Library, the displaced handful of Almas Jedi, a collection of Shan-family holocrons from Tython, the Iron Knights and Alstian splinter order, an unattached supply of Force Sensitives. The whole edifice finally comes together here, or at least starts to, as the New Ossus Academy begins to become a thing... A/N 3: Shaak Ti and Asajj sticking around. Surprise, surprise, for those that hadn't figure it out yet! These two, along with Padme, are currently the only women I can see potentially joining Izuku/Aayla/Mei in their relationship. No, it isn't overly likely that it will be ALL of them. But those three are the only ones I can really see that are in the right age range and potentially have the right chemistry. Thus, I've brought them all into interaction range with the duo so that I can start asking/polling people about who (if any) they want to see included beyond Aayla/Mei. Expect to see the first of several polls on the topic pop up soonish.

Chapter 77 A/N 1: So, I'm honestly surprised how many people didn't clue into the fact that Mei's 'remote sex toy' was the product of her larger experiments. Even the people that connected the dots thought they were being clever by pointing out other uses for the portals she made :-p. The reality is that the Portal Panties were supposed to be a hint that Mei was working with the Infinity Gates. Remember, I had her take a download of Kwa technical knowledge clear back when they went through to explore Tython. Her deciding to turn the prototype into her chastity-belt/portal panty remote sex toy was simply her original prototype being small enough that she thought it would be fun to tweak it that way. Since no one seemed to be connecting the dots, I decided I needed to make it more obvious... A/N 2: Oh hey, we finally have a name for Mega Milk! More to the point, I wanted to mention that 'plasma railguns' are a real concept. They are NOT solid shot projectile weapons. Instead, it's a type of railgun that fires a plasma burst. While the literature on them isn't overly robust, I'm using them here as another 'Mei is irritated at the stupidity inherant in the system' invention. While they have downsides, such as only working properly in a vacuum, they are a pseudo-scientific answer to starfighter ranges. Mei thinks (like I do) that the practically knife-range that starfighters dogfight at is stupid, so she introduced them as a longer-ranged plasma weapon for a pure space-superiority fighter. The fact that they ARE pure space-use-only is a downside that offsets the increased range they will have. A bit of a tradeoff rather than a straight upgrade. The Energy Torpedoes though...that bit is actually based in existing Star Wars tech. An H-6 prototype stolen by the pirate Nym was modified with a Bomblet Generator. Which could generate infinite bombs. If it could do that...I argue that the more sane use of it would be to create an energy torpedo system. Relatively short ranged, much like starfighter missiles, but without the ammo limits. Their new fighters have them in place of concussion missiles or proton torpedoes. They do have a downside in that they aren't guided, meaning they aren't great for anti-starfighter work. But they are fantastic for letting them take on bigger ships. Eventually, they'll realize the weapons mix isn't ideal and MK IIs of the Hero/Sidekick line will have a slightly different matchup with the energy torpedoes end up in a bomber design instead. But that's me trying to depict a legitimate development cycle rather than making a perfect fighter all in one go. A/N 3: I hope people enjoyed the little lemon seeing what the OTHER end of Mei's little experiment is like ;-).

Chapter 76: AN 1: Yes, I really named the space station variants Plus and Ultra. Remember, Mei is one of the League's primary designers. The Minion-class I actually debated calling the Bakugo-class, just as a measure of spite from her calling them smaller and less important. But since I haven't really built up the background of them back in the MHA universe, I decided it didn't make much sense. AN 2: Chewie! Honestly, I just felt like he was a good cameo for how some of the ground fighting is going. Tsyk is a minor detail that needed dealing with too, in case anyone has actually been double checking my details on the galaxy map :-p. AN 3: Anakin and Obi-wan are back! Also, they are showing off the Council's reaction. Which is, shockingly, a useful one. They've pivoted their internal crisis into focusing on dealing with some corruption issues. Of course, while this will do some good and cause Palpy some headaches, it's far too little, too late, to stop the Clone Wars from coming entirely. At best, they can delay them a bit. AN 4: Celeste as a target! One that just might end up being important... AN 5: Ohhhhh, so that's where all those mothball ships went! Most of them aren't worth putting back into the line of battle. But many of them are from eras with major warfare, meaning they have a lot to teach the engineers taking them apart about building better warships. Of course, WE already know that the Paladin is the first battleship in production by the League. So Cadet Greenscales other thought about just how large of a ship might be in the works is something to take note of ;-). AN 6: Poor Asajj :-(. Still, this time she has someone else who understands to lean on and help her through the loss...

Chapter 75: AN 1: The only thing I really feel the need to comment on here is Dooku. I haven't touched on him much yet since he's currently mostly running around in the background building up the Separatist movement at this point. However, given how close to Hutt Space his future capital is, there's no way he hasn't been paying attention. Ironically, the fact that he's been seeking out military assets for the CIS has also lead him to be the only one who has so far noticed that something weird is going on with the League's ability to build ships. He's come to the wrong conclusion so far, it's the IES yards that are messing with his numbers, not a hidden backer. But so far he's the only one to connect the dots even that far...
