First of all, I want to thank everyone for the incredibly kind reception to my PAFL comic announcement. It's something I've been really stressed about for a long time, and seeing people be so understanding felt like getting a huge weight off my chest. The Making of Z.A.T.O.

I thought I’d have a lot to say, but in the end this whole thing turned out relatively short. This is how Z.A.T.O. came to be.

EARLY CONCEPT

The initial concept was inspired by Vladimir Sorokin’s short story-within-a-story, Murrain. It’s an extremely grim satire of the early USSR, which tells the tale of two inspectors coming to a village experiencing livestock death. Said livestock turns out to be humans.

Important notice!

Because of technical difficulties, the Z.A.T.O. Digital Art Pack will only be available for purchase on Itch (and perhaps on Patreon) at the time of release. I've already contacted Steam support to help resolve the issue.

The art pack is simply something you can get if you wish to support the game in some way. It's a collection of HD concept art, promotional art, developer notes and some brand new bonus illustrations, all priced at 6 USD.

I knew the game page would have to wait in a state of "coming soon" for a minimum of two weeks, but what I didn't know was that the whole developer account would need to wait out a period of 30 days before it could publish anything at all. It's something that's been a long time coming and I've finally made my decision on. I'm fully certain it will benefit the story in the long run, but you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs, you know.

The beta test is almost done! I've already got a lot of great feedback:D

I've made some corrections to the game script (there was a LOT more typos than I expected lol), finalised the UI, added in a CG gallery and a bunch of little things to improve readability (clearer character indicators, dates when the day changes starting with episode 2, etc.).

Gonna start working on the game cover illustration for the stores and the short intro animation!

THE BETA IS DONE!!

I'm very sorry for the lack of updates! Prepping the beta took longer than I expected, so I've been locked in all week. But I finally sent the build out to my proofreaders! So hyped to catch some rest.
I'll be working on finalising the UI and some visuals while the playtest is in progress. Not gonna do anything fancy with it, but I'd like to at least add a short intro animation.
