The Wheel of Wonder Spin #13 Smokey and the Bandit (1977)

Comments

Just watched this with you sis. Thank you :) . I was in the US Army stationed out of the country when this movie was popular. I served in 1978. Back then there was no social media or cell phones and if a soldier was stationed out of the country, TV was in the host countries language. We just had the Armed Forces Station. They were able to acquire this movie and OMG I must have watched it like 8 times LMAO along with other soldiers. They were showing it day and night and I never got tired of it. Oh by the way we didn't wear seat belts in the 60's or 70's of before. Literally the first time I wore a seat belt was in the 80's Oh if you loke a young Sally Field he started in two TV series. Gidget as a young teen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UPJJVBDElQ&t=5s and the Flying Nun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_Ep22fnsrE ................. She and Burt who was the number one sex symbol man in that era, started a very hot relationship after this movie :)

I drove an 18 wheeler across the country for three years. Lots of scenery for sure. Never got to Canada, though. Probably you've heard it by now, but back in the 70s, you couldn't buy Coors east of the Mississippi. I used to bring several cases home when I was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas when I was in the Army. It was a lucrative proposition. A truckload could make a fortune at the time. Gear jammers are one name for truck drivers. Those flat front trucks are called cabovers. The driver sits in the cab over the engine. They more or less quit making them in the 1990s, as they didn't ride as smooth as the trucks with the engines out front. Sally Field's mother was an actress too. She used to be on Perry Mason all the time. Jackie Gleason was a comical genius. You can find some of his old stuff on YT. Down here we say Bew (like crew)-ferd not Booford. Isn't poontang that gravy and cheese thing y'all eat in Canada? The thing about a lot of these movies is they never smooth out the dirt or sand from previous rehearsals, so you can tell where they're going before they get there. That's just lack of attention by the movie makers. If you didn't catch it, beaver is trucker's slang for a female. Hush Puppies are little bits of fried corn meal and onions and spices and stuff. We eat 'em all the time down here. Especially with fish. Talk nice about trains now. I have a train YouTube channel. We nearly died when gas went from 32 cents to 55 cents per gallon! It was awful. Of course I'm sure you realize Jerry Reed (Snowman) was a top notch guitarist and country music star. He did the singing in the background music during the movie. When he was making the collect call, the reference to Canadian country music singer Hank Snow. It's funny that when Sally is laying in Burt's lap, it shows an automatic transmission shifter, but the car sounds are all straight shift (or manual) transmission sounds. When they show all the trucks in a row, that's called a convoy. Convoy is another good movie starring Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw, Ernest Borgnine. ROFL Looking down into cars is a favorite passtime of truck drivers. I've seen some very strange and some very funny things going on in cars! ;) I get so so tired of seeing them wreck police cars. It's such a cliche now. Like a joke you've heard 100 times before. I've been thinking about the best line I used while driving a truck. I used to say there's a bear in the air (police helicopter) checking logbooks (something truck drivers used to record their driving time, a legal document checked by DOT). The popularity of the movie was Burt Reynolds. Everything he touched seemed to turn to gold. Another of my favorite Reynolds is called Stroker Ace. He's a professional NASCAR driver that gets trapped in a bad contract. His mechanic is Jim Neighbors (used to play Gomer Pyle, USMC). It also stars Loni Anderson and Ned Beaty. Fun fact: after this movie, you couldn't buy a black Trans Am. They sold out after the movie and they couldn't make them fast enough to keep up with demand. A fun movie. Fun to watch it with you. Greg :)

Sadly CB radios weren't really a thing when I started driving. I had one in the truck and it was handy for weather and traffic but mostly it was guys talking grimy to each other. This movie is the reason I went to truck driving school and got my CDL. I wanted to be the Snowman. He's just there living his best life with his dog singing to himself. He always had a cheery attitude and i feel that he's happiest when he's driving. I know that feeling very well because I've had that feeling. I only drive locally now but I feel that itch, that call of the open road.

I like to think of myself as a relatively intelligent person who went to good schools and even has an advanced degree from one of them, but I'll be damned if this profoundly stupid movie isn't one of my favorites of all time! God knows, i've probably watched it more than just about any other. Burt Reynolds was a god. I mean, he was the biggest box office star on the planet for about eight years and in that time every movie he made could be pitched as "Burt drives a fast car and is charismatic as hell for 90 minutes." And it always worked. BTW, his best movies were "Deliverance" and the "Longest Yard”, both of which he made slightly before his career peak and are well worth watching. On a side note, Sally Field has always been a dead ringer for my mother and the resemblance is eerily uncanny in this movie. Also, my grandad (her father) bore a VERY strong resemblance to the late, great James Garner, which made the romantic dramedy “Murphy’s Romance” one HIGHLY awkward family movie night at one point in the late ‘80s.

Congrats Snake! I think I'm going to have, "We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there" running through my head for the next several days!! 🤣🎶🤣 I wonder how many black Trans Ams they trashed to make this movie! Such good chemistry between Burt Reynolds and Sally Field! Both are so charming in this one!!

SÓ TRUE IM LOLing at the first paragraph!

Movies are kinda weird. Ten minutes in and I'm completely rooting for these two good ol' boys to get the job done. Why? No idea :) Only seen bits and pieces on tv, so it was fun to watch the whole thing. Great music and banter. Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is another crazy 70s one like this.

Fair warning: If you watch Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, one line of dialog spoils the plot twist of Smokey & the Bandit Part 3. Of course Bogus Journey is wayyyy better than SatBP3, so it’s not a big loss. P.S. Please watch Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey…

Scot

That movie was part of our culture. I remember. Grossed $300 million against a $4.3 million budget, becoming the second-highest-grossing domestic film of 1977 in the United States.

Lol!

LOLOL!!!! Totally!

LOVED this movie in 77!! Was very popular then. NOW? I watch it and cringe.. Soooo cheezy and over the top. Love Burt (the longest yard) but this movie definitely a time capsule of 70's redneck humor.

RFK Fan

Hey, this will be cool since you're such a fan of "Boogie Nights"!🤩🤩🤩🤩. Ok, won't say anything, no spoilers. ;)
