I'm a couple days late watching this, I didn't think they'd lose almost everybody in the air wing. Minus the 4 planes who had to turn back do to mechanical problems. The only part where I felt optimistic was when that new crew was maneuvering like a fighter plane and made it back. You asked about the swastika's on the side of the b-17s Ames, those are kill markings, so that bomber with the 2 swastika's means 2 german planes shot down by that b-17. Also you asked what those allied/US fighters were at the start of the mission. My best guess is that they are p-47 thunderbolts. They have a very unique look and can be recognized by their thick fuselage. The "fuselage" being the main body of the plane. The p-47 fighters could take a lot of punishment and did pretty well in the war, but they only had enough fuel to escort the b-17's a fraction of the way on their bombing runs.

I think thats what started to get me..Them having to come back and pack up for their friends. Oh interesting! I'll have to take a look at that series!

Wow this was a rough episode. I just can't imagine coming back to an empty barracks wondering why I survived when all the others didn't. Please consider watching Greyhound also on Apple TV. It's about trying to protect the Atlantic convoys from the U Boats and stars Tom Hanks as a destroyer captain. Gives a look at a different part of the war than you have seen yet.
