Masters of The Air Watch Along Epi 1

Comments

I have been looking forward to this series since I heard it was going to be produced. I’m 61, and literally every adult in my family participated in the air war against Germany. Most significantly, at the time of this episode, my great uncle was in command of the 8th Air Force Fighter Group, then the 8th Air Force 2nd Bomb Division, flying 24 combat missions in fighters and bombers as a major general (two stars). The 100th Bomber Group depicted in this series was part of 8th Air Force. This guy was a legend in my family, and, as a teenager who had already fallen in love with history, I talked to him quite a bit in the years before he died. He had no kids and I think it tickled him to indulge my many phone calls and letters quizzing him. Based on what I learned from him, I’m looking to see if some big developments in the air war are examined. First, the adoption of spare fuel tanks on the fighters that could be dropped when they went into action. This allowed the fighters to accompany the bombers all the way to Germany as well as control the skies over Normandy on D-Day. Second, the change in tactics of the fighters, from close-in defense of the bombers to flying far ahead to actively hunt to German fighters. Looking forward to the rest of the series and your reactions.

I enjoyed the first episode. It's clearly well made. It may not be fair to compare it to Band of Brothers, but it's inevitable. With BoB they allowed you to spent a good amount of time with the characters before the action. It was really like you were one of them, making it so heart wrenching when bad things go down. Of course the interviews with the actual persons, helped to make it so real for the viewer. Not saying they should repeat that here, at this point that can't anymore of course. But it wasn't even clear to me if these were actual persons, but that may be my bad. But they do however jump in the action so fast, I hardly know who's dying/getting hurt and just care a whole lot less than with BoB, because they feel much further removed from me that with BoB. But it was the first episode, let's see what they do with the whole season.
