I was an infantry company commander when this operation went down. I knew the guys who were involved. Mike Steel was a good friend of mine from Infantry Officer Basic Course and we went to Airborne and Ranger school together. Unfortunately, the Mike Steel I know then (great guy) became the Mike Steel you see in this film and, worse, the Mike Steel we would later see. Also, before he was deployed, Durant had flown many training missions for my unit and I got to know him through those interactions. As such, I still have a difficult time watching this movie as it always makes my blood boil. Physically I am well past what I was when this occured, but mentally and emotionally it is still very fresh.

The papers were full of pics of Bill jogging in "short shorts" and stopping at fast food places. Basically, America realized we had just elected a smooth-talking hillbilly. (How quaint to imagine a time when Bill's behavior was seen as slightly trashy for the presidency -- good lord, what timeline are we in?) I was in college for the Ferrell era so didn't see too much then. Carvey-Hartman to Farley-Sandler was our wheelhouse.
