Suprise Familia! We are FINALLY diving into American Hustle Life!! 🎉🙌
We are genuinely excited to see a young, ambitious BTS go to L.A. for the first time (except JKl lol ) to learn about Hip Hop! 🎶
This was only BTS' second reality show so we are thrilled to see how this reality show helped BTS grow into the artist they are today. We remember that Dark and Wild was actually filmed during this trip, and a lot of songs were filmed in a humbling LA garage!
Imagine the stress and growth they were going through! They were in the US for the first time (except JK), they were learning about Hip Hop, and they were creating an album!! 🤯
We're excited to see what American Hustle Life has in store for us! 💜
This could have got really bad with the kidnapping stunt because JK. Could have made a run for it when they got to the apartment and they would never have caught him. Also did you notice that Suga moved away from JK half way through them on the lounge. It was Jimin next to him from then on. ARMY says Suga either realised the camera or when they were yelling at Jk he said something to the kidnappers and it was cut out. I think RM was made aware of this beforehand because although he spoke English he didn’t step up and communicate like he usually did.

I recently joined here so I'm trying to catch up on content. Thanks for reacting to this series.
I know many like to bash it and point their finger at BigHit back then for the 'kindnap prank' but MNet put the show together, Tony talked about the kidnapping thing and he agreed that part was rough but Mnet had this vision of what seeing what real hip hop would be like... remember this is a company from SK, not America. SK doesn't allow tattoos to be shown because they think it means your a criminal/part of a gang/problematic.
Also remember that BTS was new and this was their chance to get seen by having a show on a major broadcasting network.
Also, there are behind the scenes, and Mnet revealed some more clips that showed staff checking on BTS after the 'kidnapping scene' they got their make-up touched up then had them get back into position on the couch- This was a partially scripted show, they did cuts and stuff. They were told to play it up more so some of the people on the show come off as assholes but they've done interviews where they even said they were told to play it up.
Yes, some parts are a bit much. However BTS learned a lot from this show and not once have they said they regretted it... though they did regret their clothing and hairstyles from these days.
One more thing- They went to LA for K-Con, right after K-Con they filmed AHL and while filming for AHL, they were recording Dark n Wild. So they were working double time.
anyway, looking forward to catching up on your content, and watching this series yet again.
I originally watched this with my cousin when it first came out. 💜

It is funny how I come back here since I want to have that experience again with y'all. If I'm not mistaken I stop re-watching with y'all at ep2. Honestly, I only get to watch like clips of this show! But like Marisol said I'm keeping positive mind on this & I want to complete this & get over it! Fighting!

I was definitely a bit skeptical when I saw this series in Patreon. Because like majority of the Army here, we really don’t like seeing our boys being treated these way. But nonetheless, I am glad to be watching this series with the Familia, as I do know there are some amazing take away frkm

Ok first, I'm so glad you didn't give into pressure to skip this. I agree with you that you should be allowed to make up your own minds. 2nd. You've got the worst bit over and done with, truly, that's the bad bit gone... There are some cringy moments to come but nothing 'cruel' like that again. I truly enjoyed AHL after the first episode or 2 were finished, especially after Coolio left. I think even though that first episode was questionable, and some of the people working on the show have done questionable things since then, we shouldn't boycott AHL because that would take away the hard work the boys put into the show and there's certainly moments and experiences from it that will have definitely helped to shape them.

I'm so glad you are doing this despite the MANY negative comments. I've seen the show all the way through about 5 or more times. Other than the first couple of episodes, I love it very much. In case no one leaves a link, there are "unreleased cuts" you can watch, very short, for each episode: https://www.dailymotion.com/ArmyBaseSubs/playlists Love you guys!

Yay! Wasn't expecting this but so glad you are watching it! Though yeah it's got some straight up ignorant parts, it's also where they gained true knowledge of hip hop and unforgettable experiences.
I will say that it's comical how many Army take what happened in this scripted, pre approved show for the most part so personally when we all know they have been treated way worse until they became popular in Korea and still even now in some cases. Mistreatment and unfairness takes on alot of faces. But, now everyone loves them and their achievements and how BTS can benefit them, where as they where accepted and encouraged and told they would do well on AHL when not to many even knew who they where back then!
Honestly, what makes me even more upset is the details of the concept. Like who thought it was a good idea to take some of the most negative, stereotypical, ignorant actions to make that the reflection of hip hop to young impressionable Korean boys? Being kidnapped and bullied by big black guys no less! How is that Hip Hop!? All that did was likely cement that negative view of what media only chooses to focus on when it comes to black folks. But then again, they accepted the job to scare them like that, so everyone in the first few episodes are idiots, including the writers imo! Scarring my babies like that back then! If I had a belt! 😡😁👀

Only the first couple of episodes are cringey!
It's completely fine once you get past those though and there's actually a lot of really wholesome moments like their very first concert in The US and when they boys went and helped the homeless people who then gave them some really inspiring advice in return.
There's a lot of really interesting moments too like I loved seeing them try their hand at regular jobs and seeing how Yoongi writes his lyrics and stuff!
Plus the Warren G part was really cool too like he's so nice and supportive of them and the lovely woman on the piano (who's name escapes me right now) and there was also Jewel who was so sweet and supportive and she looked after our boys and took really good care of them💜
Jewel sadly passed away just a few months after filming in a car accident though and the fandom still misses her every single day 😔💔
But yeah like I said, it's only the first couple of episodes (the ones with Coolio basically) that are really cringey but once you get past those it's completely fine so I would very highly recommend giving it another chance 💖

Watching this prank makes me really uncomfortable. They were just kids and were being constantly intimidated by huge guys and talked to like dirt. I feel sorry especially for Baby Jungkook, he looked terrified, meanwhile Yoongi out here looking completely indifferent as if he's only mildly inconvenienced (I think he knew all the time)

i'm excited to rewatch this with you guys. like a lot of people said there are some cringey things that happen on the show but for the most part it's really not that bad. i think it was a good learning experience for bts and i think they really took to heart a lot of things they learned from the show. one of the things i didn't like though is when coolio said tae was dumb. i don't remember exactly how he worded it but that did make me uncomfortable and honestly pissed me off a bit. all in all it's a good show and even bts said they enjoyed it so it can't be all that bad :)

I agree with everyone here that the kidnapping prank was so UNNECESSARY! JK was literally 17 years old here! Like the boy thinks he was gonna get sold off so ofcource that is indeed scary and traumatizing omg! I watched this series when I was a baby army back in 2017 and yes I finished it but did not have the courage to rewatch it again unlike their other shows that I rewatch from time to time until now. Will try my best to get through all the hard scenes to watch it with you guys and that kidnapping prank and seeing young JK in his iron man socks getting teary eyed made my heart sink. Grrr! :(
But i do agree that this is indeed part of their journey and a must-watch if you're an army so i'm glad that you finally started with it. Let's all clench our hearts and get through the hard to watch stuff together familia and look at the brighter side that somehow it contributed to who and where the boys are at today.

There are definitely a lot of cringe moments, but there are also so many beautiful moments as well. I really do believe that this experience helped shape who they are as artists and their perspectives on the world and on their own lives. I for sure understand why so many people disliked this show and I don't like watching them put into uncomfortable situations as well. That said, from discomfort comes growth, and hearing them talk about this experience after made it all worth the watch for me.

100% agree. both sides are toxic. you can’t stop someone from watching a show, enjoying it and recommending it, but you also can’t get mad at someone for pointing out things that made them very uncomfortable.

I'll be honest, i think the thing that i dislike the most of it is the army's who like it. Like, yes, good that you liked it and it's your favorite show but for some army's is uncomfortable and don't like it, you don't have to go into every comment and judge them saying that they're wrong

Hello Familia, Yes I’ve seen the series before and yes it’s hard going for the first few episodes. However, it gets better and better so as with most things, if you can endure the hardships you will reap the rewards. The boys look back on this time with fondness and it made them (like you’re doing with their music) look deeper into where their influences came from. Looking forward t continuing the journey with you 💜😊💜

I just want to say on behalf of Coolio, he's OG. He wasn't rude--he was serious about a craft he helped pioneer and that he and his ilk were largely criticized for back when rap wasn't seen as legitimate, quality artistry. He wanted to be sure that these boys weren't going to treat hip hop like an aesthetic because hip hop is, at it's core, emotive and political and tells the story of Black America. I'm so glad that he made sure they were prepared to take it seriously. Yeah, it hurts us a little to see Tae picked on but I get why Coolio didn't think his jokes were funny--that's a generational and a cultural miscommunication. But I just have a hard time watching ARMYs vilify Coolio for trying to make sure that these guys who were aiming to take up the hip-hop mantle and represent it in Korea, understood that it's about more than gold chains and bandanas--which given the entry "what is hip hop" interview, I think some of then didn't really fully grasp. I think AHL and Coolio and Warren G specifically are part of the reasons why BTS' approach to hip hop was never as problematic as most of Korea's. And Coolio, once he gets to know the boys better, warms up to them.

Coolio isn't stereotypical hip hop, he's OG. It's become "stereotypical" because that's what he and the rappers of his era were actually like. And he wasn't rude--he was serious about a craft he helped pioneer and that he and his ilk were largely criticized for back when rap wasn't seen as legitimate, quality artistry. He wanted to be sure that these boys weren't going to treat hip hop like an aesthetic because hip hop is, at it's core, emotive and political and tells the story of Black America. I'm so glad that he made sure they were prepared to take it seriously.

I actually hated this first episode and thought if anyone put my teenage son through that I would have kicked their ass. They were super young, in an unfamiliar country, not speaking the language and without their managers that they count on? Not cool. With that being said, they did get to experience tons of great things throughout the series and learned a ton. This trip definitely helped shape them as a group, I just thought the "staged kidnapping" was totally unnecessary. It is mind blowing to know that they were doing all this stuff during the day and making "Dark and Wild" at night all on the same trip. They had to have been beyond exhausted.

Korea has the lowest crime rate. Korea is the safest country in the world. You leave your stuff out there an hour later, and no one steals your stuff and stays there. And it's not dangerous for a woman to walk around late at night.

Yaaaaaay finally you're watching this!! I think this would be my third time looooool 😂 My favorite episode would be when they were with Warren G. and the episode where they had their tutors 🥰 Just my advice since not all ARMYs like this series, please watch it prepared because you'll definitely see cringey, uncomfortable and even maddening situations the boys are put it but I assure you that If you think about it they actually learned a LOT from their experience here....which I think stayed with them to this day 😊

I don't know if you can recall... During Bon Voyage 3, when they were brought somewhere seemingly sketchy for their last dinner (Dinner in the Sky, but they didn't know it yet), they were like, oh no they tricked us again. And Jin was like, "Is this Malta Hustle Life?" :-D

First time I saw this I was a bit shocked. The first couple of episodes were hard to watch as the boys were treated so poorly. On a second watch, it wasn't that bad. It also helped to learn the context of filming. Not only they were recording their new album, but this is also around the time that Hobi was thinking about leaving the group. You can tell they were super tired. They struggled a lot during this era, but still did so well here and went back to LA a few months later to rock K-Con.
AHL is a must for ARMY, as cringy as it is.

I loved this series! sure it was sometimes a bit too much but I think they wanted to make the show interesting so they added a lot of elements. But if you look pass that, bts met many really good people and learned about hiphop! Yes sometimes it is cringy or hard to watch, but there're too many good parts in the show and it's a really important part of who bts was and is.

+ About the kidnapped thing.. I feel bad.. When I first watch it I laugh at Jhope. Their reactions.. That time I'm still young and didn't considered how they feel, that time for me it is just fun to watch.. But now when I watch it again yes I feel bad for them.. How scared they are..

Yes I finished it..I like it. When I became an army there is no run bts, Bon voyage yet that you can see a lot about them, their personality etc.. So that time I appreciate and love bts more because of this.. I don't hate AHL, it is a person who I don't like here like coolio and Dante but their actions reflect on them not on bts.. The important thing is BTS.. How they manage themselves. How they interact with this people.

i don't like the kidnap part ... seriously it's so unnecessary to scare them like that...they were so young, 1st time 1st day in another country... little english they can understand except RM of cos, even when they revealed it's prank was all English on the screen man... seeing JK about the cry .. Hobi being the happiest was so scared... they all looked exhausted almost lost their spirit ... the worst! and left them just like that no explanation no staff around them for the 1st night+ woke them up with the screams?!none of them should be treated like that!! whoever came up with this prank- HATE YOU!
then after was all fine. you see yoongi was the 1st to hug Tony in the morning after the cheering, he's so excited for this trip. The rest of this were all fine.
compare to today - the way they stand straight extra careful talked to PD, bighit's finance wasn't great but yet still had this opportunity set for them, they were on flight economy class! (imagine you see them today there?!), insane they already had international ARMYs back then, they were amazed by how big the stadium was & now they sold off concert tickets for the world's biggest venue,

Hey, familia, I'm back here because I was expecting someone to mention this but since no one did I'm here, it's nothing really, but i think they were so excited for the "American air" because South Korea has really bad air pollution, especially Seoul!! Seoul is considered one the world's cities with the worst air pollution!! So i think that's why JK said that the air in America is different and they were so excited for it lol

I love the intention of the show!! them learning and even more appreciate the hip hop culture especially bc the culture means a lot to some members. Yes I have to say there were some parts of the show which were ,in my opinion, simply not okay probably also because I dont like seeing them put in such situations but at the end day of the day the show was really wholesome:) also I loved the relationship between the members and tony and nate

I don't hate or like American hustle but it's a part of bts so I saw it I didn't liked how Taehyung, Jin and Yoongi was treated in initial episodes but later episodes it's ok and I liked Tony mostly last 2 episodes are heartwarming

I don't think it's that bad. I think the Coolio episodes are a bit tough and there were some cringe moments but I had fun watching because it's part of their journey.

I don't know if you guys will see my comment but AHL also contains behind the scene clips that are extremely short! I hope you watch them. Would be great to see your reaction to them and since they are short, you could compile 2 episodes into one maybe? Up to you. Here is the playlist: https://www.dailymotion.com/ArmyBaseSubs/playlists

The Coolio episodes are a bit... difficult... to watch because, like Marisol said, we don't like to see our boys put through such awkward situations. The same with the episodes where they were having to do some really unpleasant jobs to "earn" some money. But, to be fair, the difficulties they went through, minus the whole fake kidnapping thing, we ALL go through life as we learn to adult. And, like Marisol and Uthman said, it is very much like hiphop boot camp, a breaking down to build up on a proper foundation born of understanding hiphop. So, difficult as these early episodes are, I feel there is real value in them, and they taught the boys a LOT about how to calmly deal with unpleasant people, how to go through hardships gracefully, how to appreciate all the little things and little people that revolve around the work they aspire to do. How to be mindful and grateful of their successes, and appreciative of those that support them, and those that can't achieve all they have. We like to tout their great humility - that humility was learned through their life experiences, including this period of their careers.
- qotd - I did manage to watch the entirety of AHL. While there were definite lows, there have been definite highs as well. I count their experiences with their dance teacher, their experiences with the beatbox teacher, their experiences with Iris - all of these were deeply moving and meaningful. I love the bond they share with Tony and Nate, and their lasting friendship. I also LOVE the final episodes as they were poignant and heartfelt, and it's clear just how much the boys learned in their short time in LA. And I felt they really spent a lot of time mulling over their experiences as they grew up, and really dug into the lessons they learned on the show. So for this, I am extremely grateful they experienced this. Not because they deserved the harsh treatment, but because they gained so much from it - it taught them how to be strong for the ACTUALLY rough years they will soon face.

omg you literally took the words I’ve always wanted to say. So many ARMYs have this negative say in AHL in general but pushing it to the side and not watching it and saying it’s horrible is just not it considering it’s still their path to where they are now.

I’ve never watched it other than a few scenes here and there. I didn’t like it much honestly. It was uncomfortable for me. But I know bts have said they did enjoy their time there so I don’t wanna like cover up what their feelings are with my own thoughts. But for me as a viewer it was hard to see them in certain situations or to hear certain people treat them like how they did. But I guess it was a sign of the times back then. Thank goodness things are a lot more nice and happier now 💆♀️ but there were so many wholesome moments too, people who you can tell really taught a lot to the boys and that’s so beautiful to see!! So I hope you enjoy it!!

I know ARMY keeps saying the boys were uncomfortable, but they loved their time here. The only thing they didn’t like was the prank, besides that they said they enjoyed it. So I don’t think it’s fair to act like they were uncomfortable at other times when they said they weren’t.

I've watched it all. I would 've been ok with watching it once but I ended up watching it a few times with reactors. I like to see new perspectives. My fav episode is ep 6 I love the teachers there. There are a lot of good and important moments in the show but that kidnapping scene was so uncalled for.

I watch this show with you for the first time after 4.5 years... I remember that the beginning was terrible: this episode and the next one. For me it was this teacher and the fulfillment of his assignment with food that left a bad imprint. But later the vibe show and America changed, Tony and Nate left a good impression, as did the future teachers. I just watched this part with one eye, this abduction spoils the mood very much.
And I'm sorry, but I always find it funny to see your shock in the word Russia. I'm from here, they were here once in 2014 and never again. It seems that we will react with the same surprise someday. They were in Russia ????

Familia, if I could make one suggestions it's ignore everyone's hot takes and form your own opinions. Like just watch it and enjoy it (or not) and remember these are our boys whom we love and a part of our history. ARMYs are weird about AHL but you shouldn't let that impact your experience. :)

THIS. So many kpop artists try to do hip hop and end up being so disrespectful bc they treat it like an aesthetic. Coolio, Warren G, their tutors made sure that the boys understood it was political and artistic and emotional and liberating. They were harsh about it but I think the mentors had every reason to be skeptical abt their commitment and intention at first. Once everyone saw that these kids were the real deal and willing to approach hip hop with a genuine heart and an open mind, they really rooted for them. I think AHL is one of the reasons why BTS' approach to hip hop was relatively unproblematic (with the exception of a few early mis-steps).

I know the first 3 episodes are kind of hard to watch but I feel like the experience is part of why the boys are so respectful of hip hop culture and history. A lot of kids try and act tough and “hip hop” while knowing nothing about it, and coolio (despite some of his unnecessary comments) seemed to want to make sure they knew how important it was to changing a lot of people’s lives and not just a fun costume.

yayyyyy, im excited to watch this with you! Even though some parts are still hard for me to watch lol. But over all its great, rapline has always been interested in hip hop, but so has the vocal line. I believe this show helped them learn alot and taught them rough things they didnt know before. It's all very humbling at the end.

Hi familia! I have to say that the first three ep. maybe is going to be a little hard to watch, at least for me it was. Then with every ep. you start to appreciate a lot of things. For me, It was an experience to learn a lot of things from them. I would dare to say that they learned many things from this show because over the years they even mention it as a nice memory. Also, fun fact: Tony was the person that posted the tweet supporting jhope when he received all the hate (remember the last episode of The rise of bangtan that you watched). Tony even appears on a channel of youtubers who reacts to kpop and shows all his love and memories for BTS. Jimin, i don't remember the year mmm 2016 (?), in a vlive talked about Tony and how he appreciate him. Borageeee <3

I tried to watch this before but there are so many parts that made me uncomfortable. Not just because I can see the bois feel uncomfortable, but also because some of the those scenes makes me personally uncomfortable too as it hit too close to home.
But I also understand there are good things to see from the series as well, so have fun Familia ☺️
In the meantime, I will just skip this one and wait for another reaction. OT7 vlive sometimes maybe?

I don't usually post on here but I thought I should about this topic. I know some Armys hate this show and that is fine. But you can not deny that in some ways this show helped BTS on their path. We do not like to see our boys in any kind of distress and some of the parts are not needed but BTS showed us each and every time no matter what is going on they can and will rise to the occasion and show you who they are, The first couple of episode are hard to watch but when you get passed them. It is some great episodes that will really show you how BTS has always shined and all of their hard work.

To be honest. I have mixed feelings about this show. I do believe they learned some things from it but at the same time, it made me really angry / sad to see how they were treated sometimes. So I never watched some parts because I felt bad or it was too cringy, but regardless I'm gonna watch it with you guys again cause it's still part of their journey 💜 And i don't know what my "favorite" episode is anymore since i don't remember what episode number it was.

It took me years to get through it and finish it. It's like such an iconic series and important to their history and evolution but some of the things just made me cringe so much! Like I hated how the producers of the show made the boys seem sometimes. I also wasn't big on the concept of American-ising them by people who had no knowledge of the K-pop world. However, I appreciate that they went to learn about hip hop and that they experienced a variety of genuine fields associated with the culture of hip hop. It's definitely a must watch. I'm looking forward to watching it again with you.

YAYY! Finally! I'm so excited! I know you guys will enjoy it. It's so funny and so full of heart and it was really such a defining period for the boys and how they approached their take on hip hop. I have finished the series. I've watched it multiple times and I am excited to watch it along with you. I know you guys will embrace all the cringe (because you did with Rookie King which has more, in my opinion) and get a lot out of this journey! Thank you so much!!

Technically I finished it but I skipped a lot of parts that made me uncomfortable so I feel like I only watched half. My favorite is when they eat dinner with Warren G, he was so nice and welcoming to them. I know it's part of your army journey and everyone has a different opinion of this show, so good for you for making your own choice. I'll probably sit this one out, and will pop in for the episodes I like, but I'm excited to see what you guys think by the end of it!
