I apologize for my late reply to this Kai. Sometimes I don’t get notified on Patreon right away so I’m glad I noticed this! You pretty much hit the nail on the head in my opinion. There’s a lot of different factors that go into art pricing. While it may not be within a person’s budget, that doesn’t mean the artist is “too expensive,” it just means they can’t afford it- which is ok too! Just like with other things/services in life there’s things we can and can’t buy. It’s all about doing things within our means but respecting those that live differently.

2025-08-10 20:28:47 +0000 UTCGuess I'll give my own two cents on the art commission price topic: I pretty much agree with you in that while it sucks when you aren't able to afford a commission from an artist it's better to simply look elsewhere than throwing a fit about how expensive a certain artist is. Given my current financial situation, it pains me that I can't commission others like I used to, but I also can respect the pricing artists put their art for. In regards to pricing work, many factors can have a hand in it: the general market value that other artists use, the cost an artist feels their art is worth, the "supply and demand" increase as more people (and especially influential people) want work from them, the cost of living where the artist is, the time an artist has to work on anyone project, the type of project and its complexity, the quality of the work, whether the work will be used commercially or personally, and so on. Effectively, there's no right or wrong way to go about it besides what you think is a good price and what will get you the business you want. An artist should never feel forced by other people to charge less or more for their work just because someone says they should. At the start it's mostly guess work and copying others, but overtime you find a range that works for you and you adjust as see fit.

2025-08-06 15:05:33 +0000 UTCI totally feel you on the ever growing to be watched list! I feel like it never shortens, only grows lol 😭 It seems like most people have a similar opinion when it comes to price. If you don’t like it then either move on or learn to do it yourself! I do like the points you brought up though. The whole, “It didn’t even take that long” argument always gave me a good chuckle. I always think of other jobs, like a doctor or mechanic for example. They can do things relatively quick sometimes too but it doesn’t mean they are any cheaper. They have education and skills in something that you as the customer are asking for, hints you pay them for that service. Now granted art can be argued as a luxury want and not a need, but it doesn’t change the fact that time and skill went into making it! Thanks for commenting your thoughts on this topic too Kraiden. I always like hearing what my Ali cats think and enjoy talking about stuff like this! :D

2025-08-05 23:19:46 +0000 UTCI think it's nice that FMA is still doing well and gets some collabs and cards. :3 And congrats on pulling the signed card! Your luck really is something else lately. xD Haven't seen Takopi's Original Sin yet, but it's on my watchlist. (But you know how it goes - it just keeps expanding and never shrinks. D: And with a strong anime season this time it's way too hard to catch up with everything.) As for the topic of art pricing - yeah, that discussion always seems to stir things up. There's unfortunately still this mindset floating around that "it's just a drawing" or "you did it in a few hours, so why should it cost that much?" What they often don't think about are the time it took to develop these skills and artstyle, increased cost of living, the mental energy it requires to create consistently, ... There are just so many factors you have to take into consideration. And now with things like Midjourney and other AI tools, some people start comparing artists to subscription services - which is a really flawed comparison. Just because you can get a half decent image from AI doesn't mean it has the same value, intention, or quality as what a real artist creates - especially when it's expressive and uniquely crafted. Honestly, if someone thinks the price is too high, the answer is simple: either look elsewhere or learn to do it themselves. It's the artist's right to set a price that reflects their effort and experience - and if others are willing to pay for that, great! I'm fully in the "if you don't like the price, move on" camp too. Art is so often undervalued.
