What is your favorite monster and why?

I like all kinds of undead enemies. They do not eat, sleep, or breathe. And being immune to fear makes them a horrible threat to handle.

I live these fish fiends. I remember reading in a 3.5 or 3e sourcebook a whole chapter on them. What I most remember that impacts my concept of the aboleth is how their complex brains retain the memories of all of its ancestors. And how the aboleth can swim in the dark depths exploring these ancient memories. They can be immersed in accessing these memories for days and weeks, they are so vast...

Sorry for the late reply. For me, it is easy, my first villain... The Aboleth, because it is a terrifying and ancient creature, older than the gods, with vast knowledge and psychic powers. Its ability to control minds and manipulate others makes it a master of manipulation. As an aquatic horror, it brings a sense of mystery and isolation, while its alien nature and long-term goals make it a compelling and unsettling villain! Its disturbing design, with slimy tentacles and eerie eyes, adds to its menace.

Florian Steuri

And it doesn't have to be too complex. A post i saw today summed it up "Fictional villains: my motivation involves a complex backstory around a lost love and a deep yearning to be understood. Real life villains: being cruel makes me feel like a big strong man"

I love dragons, but the lich has always been #1 for me. It is so easy to create deeply thematic human-scale locations, items, etc., with a lich. Dragons need a bit more room.

Christopher Byler

It's a mean spirited psychic monkey. CR 1 with a stunning attack that does a decent amount of damage on a failed save. They would always be in groups.

Matt

Yes! I like them too. What freaks me out is their backward palms, that is scary.

Elven Tower

Intelligent dragons are great. Incredibly powerful, yet just as cunning. Dragons' lairs are great when properly managed and can add to the challenge of a encounter. That idea of the unique treasure is amazing.

Elven Tower

This! Monsters are easy to kill because most of the time they don't think, and they just want to eat you so no problem there. But villains that mess with your head and what you love are the real deal.

Elven Tower

Not boring at all! Who would not love dragons and undead combined in the same machine of death!?

Elven Tower

Yes! Those guys are dangerous! Something about them that has always creeped me out is their backward palms!

Elven Tower

What is the Su monster if I may ask? Spiders and swarms of insects are great too!

Elven Tower

Lizardfolk are cool!

Elven Tower

Rakshsha ever since I saw the black and white illustration in the first monster manual where he is smoking a pipe wearing a smoking jacket.

BB

Dragons. Especially intelligent dragons. The players can always talk their way out if they can appease that particular dragon's interests. I also love making unique dragon lairs with unique treasures e.g. pinned butterflies instead of gold.

Alex J Waddington

Human(oids). Nothing gets the players as excited as a villain. And every actor will tell you that playing the villain is always the most fun. Stuff like "I see your animal companion, and I am going to try to kill them. Because that will hurt you more"

Jacob Vardy

Dragons, Dragons, Dragons! Oh and Dracoliches! Sorry if that is a bit boring.

Max Arthur

I've always felt that a raksasha is prolly my favorite monster. Sneaky, and your first or second encounter with them is likely not a fight. But they are surprisingly dangerous when they throw down.

UHDNRT

My friend who used to run a game I was in loved the Su monster. I ran a tribute session for him after he passed and had to include an encounter with them. I like giant spiders, I like the crowd control and the general creepiness of them.

Matt

Liches are one of the most powerful undead. They are highly intelligent and are great for the BBEG of any campaign! Thanks for commenting.

Elven Tower

Lizardman. Something about being a walking alligator appeals to me.

Johann Weise

My favorite has always been a Lich. I don't know why.
