The Stupidity of Big Boss | Semi-Ramblomatic

Big Boss is scared of vampires and still believes in Santa Claus!

The Boss gives me the same vibe as Alice from the Resident Evil films. As the films go on, they just become more and more about demonstrating all the different ways in which Alice is the most badass, important person who has ever lived - all despite not having much of a personality - which is a crucial detail in whatever character writing sin I think Yahtzee's zeroing in on in this video. Reminds me of that famous Star Wars character test: Can you describe the character without referring to their appearance, occupation, or their actions within the plot?

And then Kojima had to poo the bed and try to explain away their powers as being due to parasites in MGSV (I wish I were kidding, it's in one of Code Talker's tapes ... looked it up "Code Talker and His Research 1")

The Boss is basically a gender flip of Captain America who didn't get frozen. Though mind you, the Cobra Unit of MGS3 being mysterious and vague is actually a bit of a deliberate contrast to the rest of the franchise where the bosses have their backstories and inciting tragic incidents monologued about at length. That they only have vague contextual hints as to what their background and experiences might be, and only a few have anything about them elaborated on (like The End being a hundred years old and probably actually having a plausible claim to having invented modern sniping) is probably a for once smart case of keeping characters mysterious making them much more interesting than trying to explain everything away, as the franchise overdoes in other games. Also, oddly enough, The Boss's actual ideals, goals and desires being poorly understood and misinterpreted in-story is actually kind of totally on theme, including that Big Boss serves exactly the same role later in the timeline. It's also on-theme with how their fame and prestige came at the total cost of their agency, that what they wanted wasn't allowed to matter anyway because it wasn't what the countries that consider them property wanted.
