Announcement about fees
Added 2017-12-06 20:57:38 +0000 UTCGood day travelers!
I received a notification about patreon's fees and how they are going to change in the near future, you should be getting this notification by email today or tomorrow.
Just so you know, as of now, Patreon keeps 5% of everybody's pledges to creators. Plus there is a "transaction" fee rate that changes every month. Patreon reports this pledge to range from 7 to 15%. In my case that pledge is usually 5%, but there is no real information about how it is calculated and why if varies month to month. So that means that I get to keep 90%.
As of December 18th, the system will change. They are taking that variable fee from creators and moving it towards patrons (supporters). As described they will charge each a premium of 2.9% (of the current pledge) + $0.35. In the case of a "per-post" creator like myself, this changed will be reflected in the January payment.
I'm not sure how to feel about this because we've been here for over a year and I was ok with the current % split. This change means that I will earn 5-6% more but all of my supporters (you) will be charged 2.9% more. There is no means for me to take the hit for you or change this in any way; i just wanted to make things clear and have it all in the open.
Patreon is doing this so that creators get to keep a little more of the pledges and to provide creators a more predictable income (because the variable fee changed all the time)
If you feel that this change is not good for you or you do not wish to pay more, just make the pledge changes necessary so that it is all ok. Please let me know what you think of this, or if you have any questions regarding this new situation.
There's some information about it here.

you are spot on! December will work as usual but starting on January I will have pledge options for people to subscribe too and pay only once a month. For the moment the account would stay the same as a "per creation" but you'd be able to choose the $8 dollar level for example and cap it at once per month. That'd amount to $8.58 which is way better than the current model.

2017-12-09 23:03:13 +0000 UTCThe fixed sum (0.35) added on to each pledge is really bad for per-post pledges. It seems the only way to respond is to group the posts, to pledge per-month rather than per-post... A 35-cent fee on $8/month isn't too bad, a 35-cent fee on $1/post is really bad. I don't know how easy Patreon makes it to move from a per-post to per-month model though, without losing subscribers... Good luck figuring it out

2017-12-09 02:34:57 +0000 UTCThanks for your words Bruce. Yeah this really sucks, specially for "per creation" accounts like this one because they plan to charge those fees for each thing. December is already rolling but what I will probably do is create some new pledge levels so people choose how much to pay once per month so these fees are minimized.

2017-12-09 01:06:44 +0000 UTCThanks a bunch Chuck. yeah we're talking small dollars here but the contentious way this is being done is what is flipping everybody off.

2017-12-09 01:05:30 +0000 UTCI am not sure how this will affect me because right now I am seeing different ideas on how much this will cost. I do know I will be backing out of a few other pledges I belong to. Either way by doing this they are in all actuality only hurting the artists that create the material on here. I think this is a real bad business decision by Patreon but we'll see how it turns out.

2017-12-09 01:03:36 +0000 UTCI don't mind them adding fees for me to pay. They might add fees to your side. But the double dipping and static fee er transaction are what stick in my craw. That said, I'm here for the content and will be here.

2017-12-08 23:34:17 +0000 UTCFrom what I gathered on the message, instead of a patron paying a $1.00 pledge, they will pay $1.38 instead. I think they should have kept the fee on the other side and made it fixed (like they have now, instead of some fluctuating fee that they used for an excuse to change it) for the Patreon user. It makes things cleaner for the supporters. I support Derek/Elven Tower because I get a great product that I need for my game-play. The fee change doesn't change that fact. I will continue to support because of the concrete help I get. This change does make it harder for those who support multiple Patreon creators (at least It would affect my desire to have multiple).

2017-12-07 21:53:10 +0000 UTCDid you get a good read on that? “Starting December 18th, we will apply a new service fee of 2.9% + $0.35 that patrons will pay for each individual pledge. ” The 2.9% and the $0.35 are both for the Patron. Considering most pledges are $1, they were taking 5-15% and now they’ll be taking 37.9% from you. I already wrote an email to them addressing this bullsh... issue. Hope all works on the Patrons and consumers favor.
2017-12-07 21:40:33 +0000 UTCThanks a lot Robert, I really appreciate it. Hope you're having tons of games :D

2017-12-07 18:38:16 +0000 UTCI know it will be a small amount, I just wished we'd been given more time. Thanks for your support.

2017-12-07 18:37:53 +0000 UTCThe percentage is not that big. I'm willing to give it a try. It's content that matters to me. I've backed a dozen or so Patreon creators. I'm down to five now. I change add and subtract those I support on the content they make and if I'll use it.
2017-12-07 01:13:59 +0000 UTCThanks for the heads up on this. For what it's worth, it looks like the company is shifting the credit card/debit card/bank/PayPal processing fee to the patron. It will not change my support for you and your work. Thanks for everything you do.
2017-12-07 00:46:29 +0000 UTCAppreciate the transparency on this one! My pitiable little donation shall remain steadfast.

2017-12-06 21:23:03 +0000 UTCNot sure how I feel about the changes, but thanks for being open and transparent with us. It'll probably be the difference of a few dollars (or less even) a month, so I don't think many will have a problem with it.
