Skeleton Crew Is Star Wars About Star Wars Under Disney | The Backdrop

True, but then you risk Franchise Fatigue. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed SC, Neil and SM33 were a lot of fun and the girls always had great chemistry. And setting it in Star Wars meant a lot of exposition was left out, which is usually a good thing. However, if you stagnate, you’ll lose your audience. I’m thinking back to the 70’s and how they went with “safer bet” movies (they did a lot of anti-gambling movies where they solved the problem with cheating at gambling). At this point, in my opinion, while their franchises are still pulling in alright-money, they should start experimenting again and take a big risk. IE Lion King; everyone wanted to work on Pocahontas instead of Lion King thinking it would be the better movie, but they still didn’t skimp on Lion King’s budget. Backing chance projects would be a good investment at this juncture, but idk what the Shareholders are pushing so we’ll have to see.

I must say that for all its many shortcomings, current Star Wars really is above and beyond basically everything else that's currently trying to exploit my nostalgia for a brand name and iconography. I'm genuinely entertained.

I think this goes both ways. It's probably easier to generate budget and viewership for a franchise entry than for an "original" (even if this original would still depend on 80s style and 80s stories); but on the other hand, if they are doing a Star Wars show for the Star Wars audience anyway, it's nice that they branch out and do something a tiny bit more leftfield than "remake a successful Star Wars movie". And basically every Star Wars story could be an original story. Rebel Moon poses an argument that being an original story doesn't automatically make stuff better. And something like Prospect could basically be a Star Wars movie since there's nothing in it that contradicts the setting. People evidently enjoy Star Wars trappings to a degree. There isn't really a reason why you wouldn't work with that audience, be it for the money or because "it's a dream come true creating Star Wars".

it's an interesting choice to have a conventional male Jedi hero who's "grown up" into a jaded, greedy, sad sack pirate - with a blue lightsaber, one of the defining visuals in Star Wars for "goodness", turned into a threat to the kids (which they eventually claw back from the "toxic fan"). And then he's also a little kid who believed in the stories and who had a lot of talent, like broom boy, but who was corrupted by "real life". I'd argue he's not even finished growing up, seeing how much the kids disturb his facade and remind him of his past.

I always enjoy a Darren Mooney video or essay. My only potential criticism is that you rise above the material. I care a lot more about your analysis of Star Wars than I care about Star Wars at this point. But as an epilogue to an era this works.

I asked on their Facebook when they did the announcement trailer why it had to be a Star Wars story. Yeah, if it were just some kids from Earth, it wouldn’t have the prestige, but it’d be more relatable and you could have more character fun. It feels like characters in Star Wars nowadays have to be a little too stiff to play into the franchise’s legacy. The kids, especially Neil, seemed to have a little leeway but they still had to work around Jedi, The Republic, and Droids. It pulled them down when this could have been The Goonies in space, but they didn’t have enough faith.

Be careful what you wish for!

Ha! We needed to swap weeks, so this seemed like a fun way to do it.

A second backdrop?! We are truly blessed :D I remember the excitement about episode 7, and I remember being shocked and delighted at the darker, grittier tone. But upon rewatching the older ones… yeah, they are for kids. Weird amount of space politics and trade disputes for a kids film but seeing Yoda and Palpatine seemingly just backflip around each other for fun while Duel of the Fates blared in the background gave me as much giddy excitement now as it did when I was a kid. You can have it both ways but not when your entire appeal depends on having watched a series of films released 50 years before you’re born but it’s weird when it tries to be serious and grounded to appeal to the “adult” audience. Love the little voyeuristic views you give into a franchise I’ve left behind.
