Should A Game Never Be Boring? | Semi-Ramblomatic

I can wholly get behind the "doing something while listening" point. And yet I just simply cannot get into the whole live service or excessive experience grind-a-thons; I've tried it with podcasts and music, but I inevitably lose focus on the game if it bores me too much... or on the flipside and rare occassions, I'll get too into the game and forget what the hell I just listened to. There's definitely a delicate balance to achieve there... and that looks different for everyone. I think for me it's because I do actually want to know that I'm doing something important. So my "thing to do" tends to instead be... well, dad chores lol. Y'know, cleaning the toilet, mowing the lawn. Even just doing an incline walk on the treadmill works well enough for me. I guess a lot of these "podcast" games just aren't for me, I do like a good amount of the "doing stuff" to be happening if I do play a game.

Sorting games. I always have one around (Balatro atm). When I have a problem in my work I need to think over, a game like this gives the fidgety, toy-loving part of my brain something to do while I think. I've been thinking for a long time about Yahtzee's theory that games either make you feel something, or numb you, and I understand the split - but I don't think it's about feeling something or not, for me. Also, numbing is pretty extreme. Are they narcotic, or are they just comforting? Idk, I'm still thinking about it. This kind of thingis why I like to listen to Yahtzee. Also the cartoons are funny.

I find a lot of stealth games have this model. Spending ages painstakingly moving around a Hitman level until you get to the right spot to wait for the right moment isn’t fun per se but there’s just something about it. Same with Death Stranding, the Mules and Terrorists were actual obstacles and distracting pains to deal with in just the right way, breaking up my constant trudging across the barren landscape when all I wanted to do was deliver more boxes.
