Disco Elysium is Lying to You | Design Delve

Comments

This is an immersive joy when done well (like Disco), but it quickly becomes almost insulting when done badly (Telltale).

HARDCORE TO THE MEGA!

I didn't like Disco Elysium as a game. It's beautifully executed, but it's evident that your choices don't matter. It's a pretty railroaded story. The character creation choices at the start of the game are baffling because they're complex and you have zero (as opposed to a limited) amount of information about how they'll affect the game.

I normally couldn’t care less about really role-playing in games, but eventually I was hoping to fail in tests just to give occasional detective, possible communist and definitely hetero-life partner with Kim more things to do. I became aware that yes, all paths lead to success but I became far more concerned with the scenery and paths taken because it was so well done and frankly so cleverly done. You aren’t designed to notice the smoke and mirrors on a first play through because you don’t know what you’re missing.

It's lying to me? You mean Egg Head ISN'T the rearranger?

While not the point of the video, doing things around town and learning about your past often gives bonuses to future roles. So there is a mechanical aspect to Kim approving of your actions and it results in the best bonus text in the game. "+1 Kim Trusts You. +2 Kim REALLY Trusts You" But that doesn't detract from the video's thesis of the illusion of choice/railroad variations. Disco Elysium is super simple in concept but ZA/UM executed it so well. It's easily in my top 10 list.
