The Bright Side of Gaming | Cold Take

Comments

I like to think I took the best of "pickup, play, move on" and preorder cultures. There are quality live-service games. MtG: Arena was excellent until recently. I've found the very best way to pre-order is to back a game from a developer with a vision. I've backed Selaco for years now. They've missed the Boomer Shooter erm... boom, for the sake of polish. They didn't have to do this. They could have released this in a broken state a year ago. That's the kind of thing that earns my undying respect. Pick up, play, move on. The whaling model just isn't fun. RAID Shadow Legends is an excellent example. I would find this fun if it weren't for the CONSTANT NUDGES TO SPEND MONEY. I know because there was a game that came before this that was a ton of fun that I loved called Blood Brothers by Dena. Yeah, they did almost the exact same things. Limited actions to take. Have to pay to play more actions. Pay to collect more summons. Just about everything. The crucial difference, though, is that Blood Brothers didn't pester me every time I finished a dungeon to buy something. I wish I knew what happened, but DeNa corp doesn't operate in the US anymore. It's a real shame. You know who does this right though? Fallout Shelter. Fallout Shelter even has Loot Boxes, the symbolic scourge of the the industry. Bethesda doesn't push it onto you every chance they get. They add content that keeps me coming back. So yeah, every once in a while I drop some cash for a lunchbox. Blood Brothers. Picked up, played, paid until they shut down. MtG:Arena. Picked up. Played. Might still play again if Hasbro stops making the game ridiculous and making terrible expansions based on IPs they own. RAID. Picked up, played, moved on because the microtransaction nudges annoyed me. Fallout Shelter. Picked up, played, kept playing. Selaco. Picked up, backed, looking forward to release because I'm confident it is going to be a quality product.
