Was Dark Souls' Blighttown a Mistake? | Design Delve

Comments

Just started my first DS1 run. Did tomb first. Blightown was comparatively a breeze 🤙

I dislike DS anyway but I have seen playthroughs to try and experience it through the lens of someone who did enjoy the parts that made me nope right out. However, it is stuff like Blightown that makes me wonder just how much anybody actually enjoys playing through it the first time and seeing it broken down like this does help me articulate what doesn’t gel with me. I enjoyed this.

But you’re forgetting one thing about Blighttown. It’s funny. It’s funny how mean it is to the player

Did JM8 mix up King’s Quest and King’s Field? Related question: Was King’s Quest the Dark Souls of Graphical Adventure games?

I'm curious why the bonfire on the ramparts above the shit pit was not mentioned. I found that fairly quickly after getting through the first poison spitters. Not saying it made it easier to get through those nasty bastards but there is more than one bonfire in blight town.

Yeah, the video really stripped away my gud blinders. I died so many times to those big club dudes before I knew how to parry. I know I didn't love it back then. I still hate the run back after queelag and the second bell. Definitely not a mobius loop there

I always get the impression that the devs intended Blighttown to be approached from the the depths - at least for new players. Approaching it from that angle makes the bonfire positioning far more forgiving - you get one in the depths themselves, and one halfway through blighttown on that bridge/ridge. In my playthrough, my main issue wasn’t getting through blighttown, but just *finding* the depths in the first place; I’d completely missed the existence of the lower undead burg! Instead, I spent ages trying to get through the catacombs (assuming that this was the “bell down below” that I’d been told to find) before my friend let me know I was going the wrong way! In the end I just looked it up on the wiki - which worked, but felt slightly as though it wasn’t in the spirit of the game

The answer is no! Now, my first fromsoft experience was the prepare to die edition, so I think it may have ran more smoothly than the original? Remastered obviously works fine. And thank you, Yahtzee and Kess, for holding my hand through DS1. I literally watched them play a sequence, then did it myself for the entire game, haha. I know that's lame. Okay, I'll watch the video now. :) I love design delve.
