Agreed! If it doesn't have an ending, it's not a story. And sticking the ending is the hardest part of any story. It's one of the main reasons why people skip writing endings if they don't absolutely have to do it. The ending is where all the checks you've been writing to the audience get cashed, which can be great if you've done a good job, and a good time to start running if you've somewhat *narratively oversold* the whole thing.

Giving us a choice at the end would have removed agency from our main character.
