Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Explores Godzilla's Twin Heritages | The Backdrop

The first episode of The Backdrop with Darren Mooney is now live!

You may have read the column version of this already as we were prepping the episode, but even if you have, it's still worth watching!

Episodes going forward will be their own scripts and topics, so don't worry about us doubling up.

Enjoy!

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Explores Godzilla's Twin Heritages | The Backdrop

Great video! Though when I read the title I was thinking of the twin heritages of scary, awe-inspiring serious Godzilla versus the more fun, kid-friendly Godzilla who beat up other monsters and protected Japan. Seems like that's another line this series (and the related movies) are trying to straddle.

It's fascinating to see that there is a strong fandom, and cultural factor, behind Godzilla unlike with most other potential monster franchises. Did it have the recognizable shift from ironic/kitsch appreciation back to serious devotion, or has its cultural impact remained the same all the time?

The music video combining a movie trailer with band performance footage truly was a wonderful marriage of advertisement and advertisement. Bonus points for summing up the plot in the lyrics!

It hasn't died. It's on the list.

Glad to see you making videos again! I look forward to seeing more of your stuff, I've always appreciated analysis of interesting things more than simple good/bad opinions. Btw, I wanted to ask if you were still going to do the TLoU playthrough to talk about it in comparison to the TV show or if that's more or less died the Escapist Exodus (the Excapodust if you will)

Ah, Roland Emmerich's Godzilla - also known as "that one soundtrack everyone you knew had next to their boom box" Great video as always, Darren!
