Update Roundup June 2025

Most of the development time recently has been focussed on back-end stuff so there isn't much in the way of new functionality so see, but there are a couple of things worth mentioning!

Labs Functionality

A couple of Goblin Lab options have been moved to the full product. The new markdown editor and read-only offline mode are both now considered part of the core notebook functionality.

Update Roundup April 2025

New Lab Functionality: PWA and Offline Read-Only Mode

A new Goblin Lab update has made the notebook a Progressive Web App (PWA)! What does that mean? A couple of things…

Firstly, on supporting browsers* you can now install the notebook which lets you open it like an app, with a shortcut on your desktop, home screen, or app drawer and having it run in its own window outside the browser.

And secondly, the notebook, whether using a browser or installed app, now has a read-o...

Update 28th November 2024 – Huge code refactor and minor UI tweaks

Today's update brings a huge amount of code changes, but very little in the way of functionality changes... Yet!

A ton of code has been refactored to remove all references to the default hard-coded columns and replaced by code to dynamically build the columns. What does this mean in reality? That the code now supports adding and customising columns! So can you add columns now? Well no, not yet, but all this work was required to be able to allow the shiny new functionality which will be ...

Latest from the Goblin Cave

Hello, notebook users!

It’s been a while since the last update, so I just wanted to share what’s been happening in the goblin cave – though this message doesn't include a new release just yet!

Things were quiet over the summer, but I’ve embarked on a major update to refactor the hard-coded columns into dynamic ones. This will allow for more flexibility in creating new columns and configuring which ones include stat blocks (and potentially other properties, like consumables...

Update Roundup March 2024

A quick note on the updates to hit the notebook in the last few weeks.

Re-authenticate Login

The re-login process has been streamlined so that when you refresh or re-open the notebook while you session is active, your session details will be saved so you don't have to log in to your Google account again. This saves a few seconds when re-opening the site or opening new tabs.

Update Roundup September 2023

A quick note on the updates to hit the notebook in the last few weeks.

Customisable note connection

You now have more control over the format of the note on connections. To make use of the customisable format, include the values {1} and {2} within your note and the object names will be positioned in those places. You need to include both {1} and {2}, and {2} must be after {1} for the custom format to work. If you omit the placeholders then it will continue to use ...

Update 30th January 2023 – Journal entry visibility and sharing improvements

Shared objects with unshared parents

When a shared object has an unshared parent, it will now be moved up the hierarchy to the next shared parent rather than to the top level. This gives other people a more accurate view of your shared objects.

Example

You have a shared campaign and grouped two NPCs in the “NPCs > BBEG and Associates” group to keep things organised for yourself, but you don’t want players to see this second level group group as it gives secrets ...

Update 20th January 2023 – Dice Roller

Rolling digital dice on a click from notes and statblocks is great, but having to write the dice notation in a rᴏllable() block beforehand doesn’t help too much with ad-hoc rolls.

That isn’t a problem any more with the new Dice Roller, allowing you to roll the dice you need at a moment’s notice!

Type your dice notation or click the dice buttons to add the number of rocks you need.

The new role will appear in the access role list along with the "read" and "contributor" roles.

In addition, for statblocks, number() and mod5e() fields can have the ...

Update 14th November 2022 – Custom CSS styling for notes

Apply your own custom CSS styling to all your campaign objects with custom CSS!

This is an advanced feature which requires knowledge of CSS and how to work out which elements to apply the styling to, but for those that can (and those who know someone that can), you can change the notes style to something that you prefer.

  • Change background or text colours
  • Change fonts and sizes
  • Increase or decrease spacing around elements

Update 26th September 2022 – New transclusion options: Object status and note summary.

Object status - {{objectid.status}} (plus more options, see full release notes) - Allows for displaying the status of another object (or multiple other objects) in notes. Useful to create an ‘index’ object to see an overview of objects e.g. a quest with a number of tasks, or an organisation with members.

Note summary - {{objectid.summary}} - Show just the first few lines of the object notes rather than the entre field.

Update 28th August 2022 – Object Prominence: Flags

Objects can have ‘flags’ assigned to them which are coloured shapes that appear in the object lists. This helps visually categorise and emphasise objects which allows you to find them quickly and easily when needed. Kind of like bookmarks or sticky-note tabs on a physical book!

Select the object flag from the object details panel. They can also be filtered on from the filter bar along with connections and text matches.

The flags use a combination of colour and ...

The Goblin's Notebook has been nominated for a 2022 ENNIE award!

The Notebook is one of five nominees chosen by judges for the "Best Aid/Accessory – Digital" category for this year which is a big deal for this goblin. So much work has gone into the notebook over the last 15+ months and its very exciting to see the product recognised in this manner. But the judges voting was to get the nominees, now it's over to the public to pick the winners!

Happy Birthday to The Goblin!

Today marks the 1st anniversary of the release of the Goblin's Notebook!

In early 2021 I was DMing and tried putting campaign notes in various tools and found myself constantly losing things, not being able to easily find things I knew I had written down beforehand, and generally finding myself unorganized. So I looked around at what was on the market to help out, tried a bunch of options before concluding that nothing quite met my needs.

So I figured I would try and create what I...

Update 22nd June 2022 - Custom Statblocks

Statblocks are no longer restricted to basic DND 5e fields and layout with the introduction of custom statblocks!

Custom statblocks use markdown to create the layout so you have the freedom to adjust the fields and layout to suit your game system and personal preference, all in the same way you write object notes. You can also use markdown templates and snippets to help you build up your statblocks quickly.

Any existing 5e statblocks can be converted to...
