First, I grew up watching this movie at the very least once a week. I still tear up at various points throughout the movie. From the music to the animation, to the portrayal of the Native Americans, to the portrayal of the US Army (aka the Americans), this movie is perfection. My only quip is the logistics of Little Creek following the train and arriving when he did. I can forgive and set this aside due to the beauty of the rest of this film. I wanna tell you to listen to the song that plays in the credits called "Brother Under the Sun." It is so good. Fits the mood of the movie perfectly. I love it! Now to talk about certain points that jump at me every time I watch this. First, the transition from the flowing of the horses mane to the wind blowing through the grass is so seamless. I love it! Spirit's mother is such a good mom. She is more amused by her son's antics as a colt, while the other mares are annoyed. When it comes to the humans. I love how the US are portrayed as the ones in the wrong here. Because we were back then. We treated animals badly. We treated Native Americans badly. We treated them the same if not worse than we treated our horses. I also love how the Native Americans are portrayed. They are nicer to others and their animals. They don't cause the trouble, the trouble (aka the US Army) finds them. I like how accurate this movie is. Leaving a horse with no food or water for a few days is an inhumane way of weakening the horse so they will be easier to break and ride. It's terrible. I hate it. And I don't think it's done anymore. I hope not anyway. Rain is so sassy! I LOVE HER! She lets Spirit know that he will not get his way when he is tied to her. She basically said,"No matter what you try, I can out smart you." I love that they spent time building up the romance between Spirit an d Rain. Otherwise that last scene where Little Creek gives her the choice to leave wouldn't have had as big an impact. LittleCreek and Spirit saved each others lives at least 3 times each. Love it! I must reiterate that I love the music in movie! It sets the tone so well. But it also fits the tone that was already there, if that makes sense. I don't know if you know this now. But they had to either get through the mountain with explosives, or haul the train's engine up and over the mountain. With explosives, they hit bedrock in the mountain. So they had to use the horses to haul the engine. You guys seemed confused about this. The scene with Spirit in the train makes me cry every single time. I love it, though! It's so powerful! Spirit and Little Creek jumping that canyon is so iconic! I love it so much! The Colonel knew, at that point that Spirit and Little Creek had beaten him. Basically made it impossible for him to follow them across. The nod he shared with Spirit was basically him conceding the win to him. Telling him,"I won't come after you anymore." I like that this was conveyed with an action, not words. When Rain is revealed to have survived, such a powerful moment. Albeit, unrealistic that she's able to gallop. But, again, I will set it aside because this movie is awesome! Then we come to probably the most powerful words I've ever heard spoken in a movie. "Take care of her Spirit-Who-Could-Not-Be-Broken......I will miss you my friend." I can't explain to you which emotions this makes me feel or why. I can't even tell you why I'm crying. But I will tell you that name he gives Spirit is such a cool name. I want a name like Spirit-Who-Could-Not-Be-Broken! Seeing the mom greet her son the same way she greeted him when he was born is so sweet. She just pulls his forelock (Hair on this forehead) gently with her lips. So sweet. I love this movie! Definitely one of if not the best Horse movies of all time. Just a couple facts to end on. During the revolutionary war, the soldiers were literally forced to eat their horses. Because they didn't have British money and they were fighting in a place that only took British money. Now though, not only is it morally unacceptable to eat horse meat in the US. It is also dangerous. Because (I now know because of a recent Food Theory by MatPat) the chemicals we give to horses to ensure health and, yes sometimes performance, leave the meat toxic to humans. Other countries do not have this problem, as they take greater care as to what they give animals and frankly other humans. USA still in the wrong on so many things. I had one more thing. This movie uses *Show-Not-Tell* PERFECTLY! You understand even the horses emotions and intentions without words. You understand the magnitude of the threats with little to no words. Wall-e is another movie that does this beautifully. You get invested with just a song setting the tone. Or in Spirit's case an omniscient narrator telling the story in bits that need or are complimented by exposition. I could go on for a while. but I'm gonna leave it here. ~Squeebers (AKA Emily Last name withheld)
