I think The Pacific was far more brutal than Band of Brothers because there was hatred between the two enemies. There were breaks for Easy Company. They went back to England to rest at the end of episode 3. In the beginning of episode 4 they were in England. In episode Captain Winters went to Paris to rest. Medals are for awarding extraordinary bravery in action. John Basilone fought for 3 days with no rest or food. 3,000 Japs attacked their position. After 3 days, only 3 Marines were left alive out of the 15 that were fighting. PS- Nothing wrong with shedding a few manly tears, Larry!

The Marine who was shot again when they were taking him away on the stretcher was a Lieutenant they called “Hillbilly”. He was named Edward Jones. Seeing Hillbilly killed broke Gunny. Then Captain Haldane was killed. When they carried his body down the hill all the men cried. They loved him because he was a good, brave officer who took care of them. Sledge wrote that the death of Captain Haldane was the worst thing that happened to him in the war because it was like losing a father. Captain Haldane guided them, kept them focused and calm. After losing Captain Haldane, Sledge was trying to take the gold teeth from the dead Jap. Snafu stopped him because he knew that Sledge would regret it later. Snafu understood that Sledge was young and innocent and taking the gold teeth would destroy his conscience. The Japs took something from Sledge (his Captain), so Sledge wanted to take something from them. He was only 18. It’s not really true that the Marines recruited from the lower classes. Sledge and Sid were upper middle class. Look at Sledge’s home - quite wealthy. He joined the Marines because Sid did. Sid joined because the line at the recruiting station to join the Navy and Army was too long.
