Video: Colliding Asteroid Field

Definitely the longest video I made. A group of 100 asteroids is placed inside a periodic boundary and given random velocities. Will they cluster into a single large planet or fragment into thousand small pieces? Place your bets.

The simulation took about two days to compute and render with raymarcher.

It require like the permanent tidal force of the sun that should simulate an entire orbit + periodic? I'd like this as a future update both for Spacesim and OpenSPH, thank you for your work!

Francesco Radica

Yes, it's possible, although it requires a specific setup (boundary conditions, external tidal forces) which OpenSPH cannot currently do.

Amazing video! I take the opportunity to ask a question: I'd love to make a real planet formation simulation, using SPH or N-Body. The point is that i would like to focus in only one planet per time, and I suppose it's a pain to simulate "a ring" around a star at a given distance, like the earth. the simulation may take forever. Is simulating a periodic boundary box with a given Angular Momentum the same thing of simulating an annulus, but easier? I already saw this kind of thing in literature, they are called "shear sheet" and they use that to simulate the Saturn's rings, i ask if it is possible to do a similar thing with the planet earth, in way that there is much control on the simulation.
