Shading??? Thoughts???

So, one of the things that has always sorta haunted me about my art is the way that I color/shade. And along with all the other revamping I want to do for my next comic, I want to address my shading to see if I can make it better.

This is a hard one for me guys lol... I've been blending out my shading ever since I started comics. Hell, even BEFORE I started comics, I was blending my shading in digital art. So, I really can't be objective about my own work here. Doing shading in the style that I did above (to me) just looks unfinished.

So I'm asking for your honest opinions here! Do you like this style of shading more than what I do in a typical TLLT page? Does it make the art more interesting to look at? Does it give it more character? Does it matter? Am I overthinking things?

Keep in mind, I'm trying to IMPROVE, not do what's easiest or most comfortable for me.

This looks very nice here, but I feel like your style would be better in some places. I'm not even sure how to explain what I mean. Like indoor and outdoor lighting, IDK. I love your art.

This is a very well thought out and important take! Honestly I think you’re right— and a better/more skilled artist would probably push these kinds of nuances. I said in a comment somewhere down below that I think I will end up using both/a blend of the two. :) but I didn’t think about it from the perspective you’re saying. You’re right— there are times and places when a harder shadow would be more effective, and there are times when a softer one would be. My only thought about this, is that when making a comic I will also have to weigh in the time it takes to produce content— and consistency is key to that…. So I’ll have to keep playing around with this style and merging it with my normal, current style. 🙂

I think you should actively use both. The shading in this post works with bright light that shines in a specific direction. It looks beautiful and adds good depth. Is great for outside or harsh lighting, even low light if there is a single light source (like the moon). However, I just went back and looked at the most recent update and your shading style there is more dynamic and realistic for soft lighting or lighting from above/multiple directions. I think its really nessecary for indoor or low lighting scenes. I also think it allows for more artistic and dramatic scenes that aren't directly tied to the "realistic" light source... Aka depictic a character's mood or obscuring/highlighting details. Just my 2 cents
