Chapter 3 - 9

Couple things with this update that I love--

#1 - When Rowdy and I were reviewing this, he totally did not understand the context of Fletch's mom being like "JUDAS!? His name is JUDAS!?" and, while some of you might not understand that either (it's rooted in religion)-- here's the thing. Rowdy went to an all boys catholic school. LOL And this whole damn time he's had no idea of the extra layer that is "Judas" by name. Worst catholic ever.

If you don't know -- Judas Iscariot was one of the Twelve Apostles. He is notorious for betraying Jesus by disclosing Jesus' whereabouts for 30 pieces of silver. Judas brought men to arrest Jesus and identified him with a kiss. Jesus was then arrested, tried, and executed.

When I chose this name for my character, one of the reasons was because I thought the irony of Fletch trusting this total stranger named JUDAS, was honestly pretty funny. (I was also raised catholic, but don't consider myself religious anymore.)

Okay #2 thing I love about this update - It really shows how Fletch is growing and changing as a person on this trip. I added one of the older updates ^^^ up above because I wanted you to see Fletch's reaction when Judas joked about murdering him in his sleep at the diner. Fletch's exact words -- "That's not funny..." is what his mom says in THIS update when he jokes about it. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, right? At least Fletch is learning to be his own person LOL.

Lastly #3 - I love that this update gave me and Rowdy PTSD from dealing with our own mothers at various times in our lives. HAHA. During the review we kept going "Well, MY mom would have said....." and it honestly just... really hits home. I hope some of you guys are feeling that too as you read this messy conversation. Whether you're a mother who's had to go through this with your kid, or a young adult who's had to deal with your mom. (Or maybe even both!).

Anyway :)   Much love to you readers. There will NOT be an update next week, but we will be back on Aug 3rd!

🥰🥰🥰 character growth all around

Mccull

That... went better then I expected. Though I really hope we get to see her 'talk' to Kinley about leaving him behind >_> ^_^ Also good on Fletch for standing up for his own decisions against mom.

Chrys

If you could even consider it a good deed 😆

Mccull

Kinley really about to be in a Wooorld of hurt for telling on him. No "good deed" goes unpunished Kinley. Remember this.

Felicity (daffodelila)

Kinley deserves the lecture too!!!

Mccull

Bahahaha. Thankfully Fletchs mom isn't that extreme 😅

Mccull

My aunt would have had a similar reaction to Judas' name but she would have fixated on it and lectured me for hours blaming him for everything.

rippingoffmyface

Tell her happy birthday for me please!

rippingoffmyface

I love how she got mad at Kinley and Fletch both

Kiss

Heyo — just a quick Olá from Portugal! I’m here to celebrate my grandmother’s rowdy 99th birthday 🥳. There’s 4 generations of family here - the youngest being only 3 weeks old. I hope everyone had fun reading the dialogue this week and that it brought some expected and unexpected smiles. And yes, I’m a bad Catholic.

B. Rowdy Lufkin

:) This is one of the first blatant compare-and-contrast updates we've had of Fletch growing as a character, and I do hope I get to share more of these moments as we continue on. Fletch and his mom likely wont have any more major hurdles after this one is over, but she will always be a little heartsick over him growing up. Such is life tho.

Mccull

Fletch found his voice! Damn Fletch-mum tho. Fletch ain't Jesus 🤣 Police aren't gonna storm the motel to take him out. But this trip so far has been good to Fletch. To see his independence go up and that and get more confident to push back. He needs this and I'm sure his mum will realise that by the very end. Comes a time in every adults life to get out and make their own way in the world. Not sure his mum is ready for that I can tell Rowdy didn't take as much notice to all the religious indoctrination crap in Catholic school then :p

Quadrant

I wish I had a recording of our review session between Rowdy trying to tell me he didn't like that particular dialogue and me being like "..... Y-You do GET IT though, right?" and then he had to google what "Judas" did to Jesus and... it was a whole thing LOL. Hahaha. But once he understood the layer that dialogue added, he was on board with it.

Mccull

Happy to have gotten most of the sticky conversation out of the way. Individuation is always a difficult step for both sides of a parent-child relationship, but it's absolutely necessary. I can totally see how Fletch is starting to come into his own, and now I'm just biting my nails for the sticky conversation between Fletch and Kinley. Also curious to see how Judas will react to that as well. Also I audibly laughed at the biblical Judas comment. Keep up the fantastic work to both Mccull and Rowdy, and enjoy ur convention season!!

I think its more common than not for young adults/teens to fight with their parents AT SOME POINT in order to gain independence. I've had my fair share of these sorts of arguments too.... and my mom was a lot like Fletcher's only arguably MORE guilt-trippy and manipulative. It took moving 3 states away from her to get her to back off and since then our relationship has slowly improved. Fletch is sort of a dramatic case being that he's already 24 in this comic, but it adds weight to his sheltered life thus far until meeting Judas/going on this trip. :)

I had a whole long comment all typed up and Patreon ate it! T^T Anyway! Fletcher! How much you’ve grown in such a short time! 🥰 Setting boundaries, speaking up for yourself… You still 💯 deserve the ass reaming for not even texting to say you were alive, but overall, this good good. 💜 I was also raised Roman Catholic (now happily pagan) and have always had a weird love/fascination with the character of Judas Iscariot, so I was in love with the this character just from first seeing his name. 😆 i haven’t flexed that muscle in a while, but I’m kind of a religion nerd, lol. I have been waiting to see if it would come up in the comic, and I am so not disappointed! 😂 I absolutely guffawed reading your comment about Rowdy not getting it, despite going to Catholic school. 🤣 (Rowdy, I adore you. 💜) I had a falling out of this nature (completely different topic) with my mom my senior year of high school. I was the good kid my whole life, and for various reasons, I spent most of that year grounded all the time. I stopped talking to my mom about serious/important things, and our relationship was kind of strained for a very long time. Things have been better the last couple years. We’ve had several hard conversations, but they were good conversations. Funny enough, I think coming out helped a lot with that. And me going to therapy, lol. My hope is that Fletch and his mom continue to talk over the course of the trip, continue to have hard conversations, Fletcher continues to set and enforce boundaries while staying connected, and by the time he gets home, they’re able to restart on much better, mutual footing. Also still hope she reams Kinley. 😆 Fletch, too. He’s still on my shit list. But I want to like him by the end. 😁

Sagando Mirasta

Kinley's gonna have to deal with it from Fletch now, just like Fletch had to deal with it from his mom LOL.

Mccull

Kinley you better be bundled up cause fletcher is about to give you the cold shoulder boi!!
