And although I agree with some of your points regarding this latest release I was far from underwhelmed by the song/the performance. I did wonder if she was singing live but I still thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Stage presence was on.... I was hooked/captivated! I think that she's such a great performer that I get so lost in the performance that I over look the lack of live vocals.

I appreciated her as a performer but idk why she’s so shy about her vocals as a solo artist. My first personal reaction was 🥱 genuinely. Like can I get a layered run and not a auto tuned one .

They either have one or the other. Despite having talent and fans, darkskin women in the industry either suffer from lack of access and promotion (Flo Milli, Doechii, Baby Tate, Bree Runway) or a weird lack of consistency and cohesiveness (SZA, Normani, Kelly Rowland being the queen of this category). I’d say Ari Lennox is a little bit of both, with her label issues she’s been having. Throw Sevyn Streeter in there somewhere too. I’m not saying any of these women are struggling, I mean they should all be way bigger than they are. Basically I feel like it’s by design: all of these women have talent and a supportive fan base, the demand for a sickening darkskin female artist in the top-spot has BEEN there and the industry is aware of all of this but they simply don’t care. All of the dark skinned Black women in the industry seem to be going through similar things… So i can’t *entirely* blame Normani for this mismanagement, lack of music, and lack of direction, just like I can’t *entirely* blame SZA/Summer/etc because I feel like ALL of the Black women’s careers are being stifled by the industry in some way. Unfortunately I feel like if another Black woman was in Normani’s position, it would probably be a similar story. Also please review Blick Blick cuz Nicki killed it.

Honestly we are all waiting to hear her sing live because we haven’t heard it in her solo era. Nothing seems cohesive as far as her team and these releases which I fear might be her downfall. I love her down but with the era we are in with music every move is under a microscope and her chance to breakthrough is fading a little. Hopefully the rollout is as sickening as we all know she can be!

The disconnect for me is the constant change in artistic and musical direction. “Fair” is the culmination of a complete lack of sonic cohesion in Normani’s solo discography. Up till now I’ve been able to overlook this aspect and just enjoy what she is presenting us because I’ve been entertained. She is incredible in a dance element/making dance music. With that being said “fair” is not an enjoyable listen. The self proclaimed “vulnerability” of this track feels contrived and vapid. There is also no vocal dynamic or much at all to keep the listener engaged with the story being told. Also Zach, the Janet reference is spot on.. I feel so many of Janet’s daughters have followed her lead visually, but Janet Jackson has iconic vocal production and cohesive bodies of work. It’s not purely about visual aesthetic. Her music and her visuals enhance each other.. the visual presentation was never a crutch for the music. Anyway I forgot what my point was. I love Normani but this was underwhelming and the “live” performance felt very visually inspired by Beyoncé, Toni, and Janet, which is great but it was completely void of any other elements that make those artist the dynamic performers that demand your attention.

After watching performance twice I knew exactly what it was giving. Toni Braxton, low breathy vocals, single sultry performance that has you in a spell, the RIGHT AMOUNT of sex appeal. Just enough! I’m fully clothed but i will grant you the vibe of seduction. And to prove herself capable of just a mic and herself and hold her own. Ooooo I saw it not right away but on round two of watching and listening I saw it.

I'm often just left wanting more vocals from her, cause everything else is always perfect and the girl can really PERFORM. But it just generally seems like singing and vocal training isn't a top priority for singers anymore, which I find really sad (maybe it's just my crazy music student ass always hungry for vocals lmao)

As an R&B girl I appreciate it, but when we rarely hear new music from her, this doesn’t make you beg for the album. I think safe is probably the right word
