I go with the term 'casual girlfriends' cause neither knows what being 'gay' is (the island's culture is very, very heteronormative) but they're romantically interested in each other. ;v
Just a random thing, it's not plot relevant and Gabi isn't a prominent character besides hanging out with Mari a lot of the time.

The angels don't care, it's just the human culture which I based off what I've known and experienced in classic Cuban machismo culture. While the angels do control and influence some aspects, they also adapted to the existing society and human customs. I didn't want to sugarcoat the depiction of this society, just like how Daniel gets teased for not being overtly masculine sometimes.
