In the spirit of classic sitcoms, one of my goals with the new 12-Inch comics was slapstick. I played with this a little bit in the original comics but I wanted to take it to a higher level. However, I underestimated how difficult it would be for me to achieve my goal visually right out the gate and my attempts at my first big slapstick page: Page Five were much to be desired. So... I put it off and put it off... and put it off again...
Fast forward to now when I've finished the first 11 pages, which is the first act of the first story and I still had not completed "Page Five". So I decided last month that I had to finish this page before I could move on - for better or for worse. And here we are. Funny how much progress can be made if you just force yourself to do something.
The character of Matt is not inherently funny - in fact, Matt isn't inherently anything. When working on the scripts, I focus on Kevin and Leo as the protagonists and Matt is usually (and quite literally) the bone of contention. He's privileged enough to make him unconcerned with what's going on around him - everything sorta works out for him - but still humble enough to know his primary gift is unearned. He's unaware of his size and strength - sorta like a big dumb dog - instead of aggressively dominant. He's obtuse enough to miss all the heads he turns, but can also fuck anyone into oblivion - all they have to do is ask.
