I'm trying to strike a difficult balance with Halver. (Difficult for me, anyway.) On one hand, I'm having a lot of fun with his fish out of water worldview. But I can't go too far with it because he's also been shown to be a sharp, considerate, and empathetic counselor to Lydia. So despite him bumbling at other elements of human existence, I don't think I could get away with him being oblivious here. It makes sense to me that if Lydia started acting differently towards him, he would pick up on it immediately.
