TRW Strips #123

This page is inspired by a true story. Ages ago, some friends and I were playing in a modern sci-fi-themed setting called Alternity. (Is Alternity still a thing? Is any role-playing system but Dungeons and Dragons still a thing? Let me know if so, no time to Google it.)

Anyhow I played as a heavy machine gunner and my brother was basically playing as discount James Bond. Alternity players had points you could spend to get yourself out of a jam. Last resort points, I think they were called. Meant to be saved for life or death situations to turn a bad roll into a good one. My brother's character attempted to steal a wine bottle from a resort bar, but he failed his roll. Arguing that a super-suave super-spy wouldn't find himself being chewed out by a bus boy for failing to steal a bottle of wine just for the lolz. He spent his one and only last resort point to avoid being seen and nab the bottle. At the time, we all thought he was fucking nuts. But in hindsight, I respect the hustle when it came to playing the character.

Got any similar stories of your own? If so feel free to share them here!

I won't lie - It's not a career you get into to live off of and TBH I think D&D could afford to have less of a stranglehold, but it's fun work. :D

Kyman201

It just came out this year on Kickstarter so i imagine that not a lot of people who weren’t invested already or into tabletops already.

Hooligan Mulligan

XD

Reinbach

Great! :)

Reinbach

Thanks! :)

Reinbach

Hadn't heard of that one. But that definitely is a setting that feels meant for roleplaying mechanics.

Reinbach

Maybe that's where it comes from? I didn't play tabletop RPGs before video game RPGs became widespread.

Daniel Schwartz

Thank you, greatly appreciated! :)

Reinbach

It is the nature of the game. XD

Reinbach

That's a common problem in video game rpgs as well. XD

Reinbach

Thanks! She's so smirky all the time I like giving her more intense expressions during sex if I can.

Reinbach

Yeah, DnD has the kind of chokehold on the medium that went on in the 80's and 90's when all video games were "Nintendo."

Reinbach

Nice, that's encouraging to hear.

Reinbach

Ain't it always the way! XD

Reinbach

These sound to me like knowing when and when not to use them is key. XD

Reinbach

He'll be alright, I promise! XD

Reinbach

Well it wasn't my intent that Douglas in particular was trying to be obnoxious here. This is more about the general struggle of having a DM that takes things deadly serious vs. players who just want to have fun.

Reinbach

I feel like this is one of those instances where the player is going to be blessed by the dice gods and the DM will be extremely frustrated for being unable to even touch his hair without cheating hahaha

Graci

im loving this

GhostlyJudge

I love the chibi winking Douglas at the bottom 😆

Jordan Christmas

In my only war campaign a few years back, my character was a lazy tank driver and I burned a fate point to kill a chaos noise marine by flatting him with my tank as he was blasting sounds that should have killed me

Hooligan Mulligan

I mean a lot of tabletop games are in style; Warhammer tabletops for fantasy (counting Aos and old world fantasy as one unit) and 40K, pathfinder is a thing. And you even see tabletop games for more specific stuff like one that came out for avatar the last airbender a few months back

Hooligan Mulligan

Not gonna lie, I’m gonna miss the dicks cause you’ve always drawn them so well. But I’ll still remain cause I also love the comedy you bring to the table.

SpiceofVice

As a lifelong GM, Kal's face in the penultimate panel has been my face more often than I can tell ya. Sometimes I torment my players, but most times, they torment me.

Squid Hills

I've actually run for people who had the opposite problem: "I don't want to use this resource, I might need it later." - The wizard, four rounds into a battle with the final boss of a year-lomg campaign.

Daniel Schwartz

I love Jane’s expression here.

Angelo

I'm sure there are other role playing systems, but D&D is easily the og that everyone either references to or basically directly copies.

KainRezo072

I'm actually a freelance writer for a TTRPG that isn't D&D. D&D has a massive hold on the industry in the general populace, but the industry is thriving when you get like chest-deep in the hobby.

Kyman201

Well once upon a time Bug was apart of a D&D Group. Very unconventional since we just mix and mashed all the franchises we like, Transformers, Power Rangers, Marvel you name it. I was the DM to one Quest and there was a strong monster meant to be a real imposing bad guy, however we were using a Discord Bot to do the random Attack Points and one guy rolled a 20. Which made the game awkward cause I had planned this monster to keep them busy for a few turns and suddenly he got one shot by the resident clown of our group.

Mr. Bug

So Dark Heresy has a system called fate points where they can be used for re-rolls or get bonuses and came back every session. Or you could permanently "burn" them to keep your character alive when the worst came to pass. A player in the game I'm in once burned all of his to get extra actions against an Ork...he then got smashed into the ground and was unable to come back because he'd burned all his points in one go before dying.

TheFirstSword

That last panel is excellent but I feel really bad for the dm

FRENCHFRIES

I'm thinking Lil' Janella Jr...oh, man! I can just see Jane raising the Bratty-est, Worst Little girl in the future and she loving her child's antics..on other people, that is..

Chris Davis

"You smash that dragon ass a terrible cost" Alimony.

Licorice Lain

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/. The market is alive and well, tons of games to choose from. If you’re looking for suggestions, name a genre. As for this, I genuinely hope it comes back to bite just this character in the ass. Wasting such a mechanic on something inessential like this is dumb, and possibly prevents you from saving the party down the line.
