This Romantic World Page 325

This right here is likely the most amount of blood you'll ever see me draw in the entire comic. I don't generally like drawing violence (especially if women are involved) but I thought her hand had to look at least moderately hurt or this whole page would be unlikely to land as intended.

I put a lot of consideration into how someone like Liz would handle a heavy dose of unexpected bad news. In the end, I settled on the old staple of "bottles up emotions only to erupt over something trivial." She was going to break something, that much I knew from the start. Her dad is a hulk-monster after all. I thought it fitting to see some of that in Liz when she's genuinely distressed.

But what do you think of the page? Is this a bit too serious for TRW? I try to avoid inflicting tonal whiplash if I can, and I'm counting on you guys to stop me if I start to drift in that direction. I hope you look forward to some Liz/Bria bonding in any case!

My boss says that at my job a lot too; he leads with saying that "Fearless feedback" is a priority for him always, giving it and receiving it, when we get new people on the team. It's honestly made some pretty tough projects a lot easier, knowing we could refine the plan and change direction as a team. It must be tough sometimes, even with how much you collaborate with Kal, for a lot of your art to really be a mangaka style one-man show. Thanks for communicating with us :)

Emmett

Hey thanks! I figure the only way I get better is to keep the door wide open for feedback.

Reinbach

Oh yeah judging from what I've seen in real life I agree her hand would be a lot worse if I was going for realism! :O

Reinbach

Thanks for the input! And why exactly she's upset will come up on the next page for sure. :)

Reinbach

I could see it sometime! :)

Reinbach

Great! :)

Reinbach

Great! :)

Reinbach

Thank you! Hope you like how the bonding plays out. :)

Reinbach

Thanks for noticing! :)

Reinbach

XD

Reinbach

For sure! I want to show she has a serious side too.

Reinbach

Love it XD

Reinbach

That will come up here on the next page for sure! :)

Reinbach

Thank you!

Reinbach

Figures I'd get the color wrong lol, I can't even remember the last time I painted blood. XD

Reinbach

I'm actually really looking forward to drawing Morgan again after all this time.

Reinbach

Hey thanks for the input! :)

Reinbach

Agreed!

Reinbach

This feels like it's still in the appropriate zone for this comic's idiom. I appreciate the way you talk so openly about the process and about the energy of the work!

Emmett

God I love Liz. I would say that her hand isn't quite blood enough (as someone who has been a moron and punched shit I shouldn't have), but I really appreciate how the physical outburst contrasts with her normal mellow vibes.

HungryOuroboros

I'd interested in knowing why she's upset? Maybe that hasn't been revealed yet? I love that she has a "Nerd Bag" that will help with Morgan, LOL! I understand where you're coming from, Rein, and thank you for explaining, as I too, wouldn't have known that was blood per se. I agree with IndecentTwig in that bruising would make sense as well, or just not show it, but convey with Bria's reaction instead ("Whoa, Girl, you need to go to the ER!"). Just my Two Cents.. P.S. I had to back a few pages, but now I see that Liz got some news from her Boy Friend, so that must be what's bothering her. Also, I thought her bag said "NERD" on it, but eagle-eyed readers would see it's actually "RAD", which fits Liz more...

Chris Davis

An alternative to the blood could be using purple/black shading to portray a major bruise? I think the inclusion of more serious topics on occasion is a fine addition. I find that the tone of TRW is so goofy that it softens the otherwise negative impact of tackling heavier issues. Sort of how we use stand-up comedy to address some of the darkest parts of our society (racism, economic distress, etc). Also, thanks to your note, we now need a pinup of Liz cosplaying as She-Hulk.

IndecentTwig

It’s really been a year and a half? Fuck, I’m getting old…

Lord Washington

Yes, I’m looking forward to them getting really close:)

NKL

It's all good. I'm here for it. Love me some Liz.

GregD

that's true, it could kind of just be the paint of the lockers coming off, if we didn't have the context.

Darryl Williams

I love Liz almost as much as I love character growth, this will give me both. As for darkness in the universe, you’re probably never going as dark as we’d be comfortable with, which isn’t a bad thing. Take the John Wick story, it’s quite dark, very good, but would never work in Castlewood. First movie John would have come out and those numbskulls would have been having a jerk off contest in the living room, whoever can get closest to the wedding photo under the tv from the couch gets everyone else cleaning them and the mess up. One of them says that sounds pretty gay but the rest explains it’s only gay if you’re holding hands. John hits the photo from the hallway behind the couch. One of them says ‘so much for stealing his car” and the idiots get to it, while being comedically worried about touching hands. See, really dark doesn’t work in Castlewood. Its core mechanic seems to be “all drama must end in equally comical sex or character development. Roll 1d6, on 1-5, sex.” Anyway, very much looking forward to Liz and Bria bonding

MAR

Nice facial reactions from Liz here. You can tell she's restraining a lot of emotion from her unnatural smile (wide open eyes but with a huge grin that usually causes eyes to narrow) and then you see from just her mouth that she's furuious and it's bottling over.

ScuzzBucket

Morgan, who had a sex scene with Warren about a year and a half ago (our time). She felt bad because she fell apart and was way too submissive about it for her tastes (because she wants to be in command) and Bria & Liz heard about it from Warren and decided to talk to her.

ScuzzBucket

I just want to see Liz donkey punch someone in the back of the head during sex now.

ShadowSkill

Liz can't always be silly. Like it can't rain all the time.

Jariah Synn

To be honest I thought that was part of the joke; her locker got jammed so she just punches it the same way you see a weak player on dnd roll a nat 20 on a strength check

Hooligan Mulligan

She certainly has her father's punch. Hope Bria can make her feel better.

Slaughterbug

Perfectly reasonable amount of blood. I liked when Switch had more serious topics, and I think you’re a good enough writer to balance the serious with the goofy/sexy stuff

Mike

Only complaint I have about the blood is how brown it looks. It doesn't look much like blood. Apart from that, I don't think the tone is too serious or anything; I mean Liz's nonchalant reaction after mangling her fist is kinda funny, as is Bria's response. Besides, you need to get used to drawing blood, considering Switch is gonna gonna get all Clive Barker on Vincent...

Squid Hills

who are they going to talk to i feel like i missed some dialogue?

alex baker

This is a good page. I think it's still well within the bounds of the typical mood for this series, just with a little more seriousness. If anything I'd say the pages before with Switch felt more intense and dire. But that might just be me.

Sophia Dearden

I hate how we’re told to not bottle up our emotions, but we often don’t have a choice.
