Asuka just barely beat Rei in the poll last week, which surprised me. I was afraid Asuka here would crush her, but it's always more fun when it's close.
It's been probably a decade since I've watched through Neon Genesis Evangelion, a show so famous I'd wager that most people who don't even watch anime have at least heard of it. The show has always been a bit of a trap to newcomers I feel. It hooks you with the quirky characters and big robot fights like you're in for some good dumb fun. But by the time you realize that this show is really about existential ennui and the importance of self-worth, it's too late. The doors are already locked and you aren't going anywhere.
There was a lot of sexual stuff in the show as well. And as a teen myself when I first saw the series, I had little issue with how much of the smutty content revolved around fourteen-year-old Asuka here. (Who is totally eighteen in this image! Don't go kicking down my door just yet, any government spooks who may be watching.) But if I watched it for the first time today I'd likely find it pretty creepy.
But for all its under-aged antics or any other critiques one might levy at the show, I feel there's no denying that if you watch the entire series of Evangelion, for better or worse, it's not one you'll forget anytime soon.
