I donโ€™t think she meant that they were thinking like, โ€œoh this isnโ€™t fun anymoreโ€. She was just pointing out that they were seeing him differently.

It's astonishing how 1 single line can change your whole mindset on your way of life & how you act !

When the other Vikings were quiet when Thornfinn yelled to get it over with, they were quiet because they saw how serious Thorfinn was not that it was not fun anymore

The scary part with Canute is he did everything right. Manipulating the immature, angsty young master to strike first so his retaliation will look rightious from the start. The first act of war came from Ketil's side with the bumbling idiot who shot the first arrow. Canute didn't ravage the farm, he waited. Every action was driven by the opposing side making mistakes and Canute just taking the natural course of action from their perspective. And to tame the Vikings by not raiding after they won speaks volumes to the paradise he's trying to accomplish. Attempting to change the nature of the Vikings is a monumental task and that's what Thorfinn is in awe of. Canute is undertaking an impossible goal at the cost of becoming a king that fosters hate, seen from Einar's response. Changing a habit requires repitition and that means inciting violence to practice war in a way that Canute wants the Vikings to behave. More lives will be lost to achieve his peace, but at what cost...

The thing that makes Vinland Saga such a transcendent story imo, is that it strikes the perfect balance between portraying the brutality of the world without being nihilistic and reveling in the brutality, while also being life affirming and hopeful without being naive about how difficult walking the path of nonviolence is in a world where might makes right.

Canute commanding the waves to stop is based on a story that the real life Canute did the same thing. To make a similar point that he was just a man, and was not all powerful. Though I believe in reality Canute was a devout Christian.
