in EP 1 Loid did talk about his childhood, where he was crying and there wasn't anyone else around to help him and he felt so helpless because of it, and the flashback showed a lot of ruined buildings in the background so imagine the war between the two nations wasn't too long ago and they're still trying to recover from it but everything is still tense because of that past.
