This episode is why Fullmetal alchemist is my top anime of all time. Hawkeye taking accountabilities of war crime that she and others like Mustang committed is such a good writing, especially when compared to other animes with similar plot where characters on "good sides" commit atrocities like mass murder. Other animes lazily try to justify the characters' actions and cop-out by putting the blame on other antagonists for being the "mastermind" or paiting the situation as "necessary sacrifice." Not FMAB though. The writier fully embraces the sins of the protagonistic characters and actually work the plot to show how they're trying to seek penance for their actions. Even when Edward says that Homunculus are the mastermind behind Ishvalan extermination, Hawkeye still takes the accountability as someone who participated in the extermination and express how they're planning on making the country better even if it means they'll be tried as war criminals in the better world they're trying to create.
