2025-02-27 04:32:10 +0000 UTCa very recent SBS clarified on this - I won't include all of the information, but Oda said that den den mushi are skilled mimics and change how they look and sound to copy the caller, with the degree of visual mimicry depending on the temperament of the snail.

I can think of two possibilities: either the owner dresses up the DenDen Mushi to look like whomever they're calling in order to get a better sense of conversation, or the DenDen Mushi can alter it's shape to match the appearance of the voice it's transmitting. Either way, they're fascinating creatures.

Luffy, despite being a captain, emits a tremendous "younger brother" aura 🤣 only Chopper can beat it lol. The denden mushi one was great as well! I honestly forgot about that, I thought the portable ones Nami used in LA was LA originals but apparently Oda really thought about it far before the LA. The details in the world building is soooo gooood
