BTW (and this isn't really much of a spoiler) Ryuma's relinquishing his sword to Zoro holds extra weight knowing that Ryuma is Zoro's ancestor. This further confirms that Zoro will achieve his dream of becoming the world's greatest swordsman because it's in his veins (not to diminish Zoro's merit and skills as an individual)! And again, this isn't a spoiler because: 1.) The story doesn't outright state that Ryuma and Zoro are blood-related. 2.) I mean, come on, they look pretty much alike. Like, you look at Ryuma when he was alive and then look at Zoro, they're practically twins.

When the clown guy was saying that he could control the dragon with the horn, and that it was a difficult skill, he was basically saying, “If you kill me, no one will be able to stop the dragon from rampaging through the town.” Ryuma saying “I’m an outsider” was basically him saying, “I don’t care about this town, so I have no reason not to kill you.” Which he presumably then does, off screen.

That was great. I’d never seen that before so I watched before watching your reaction. Your subtitles were ridiculously bad, but they got the main points of the story down, I guess. It’s really lazy translation work, though. Could you tell me where you watched it, please? I enjoyed the story and loved the tie-in with One Piece at the end. I wonder if Oda was planning to create a series from this. It would make a pretty good first episode. I’d feel too sorry for him, though, when he eventually returned for his free meal and learned he was the one everyone was calling the “King”. He’d be devastated to learn he couldn’t ever have the duel against the King that he wanted. I see a lot of One Piece themes potentially stemming from this short one-shot. I’m glad I watched it. Thanks. I’d have never watched it if not for you. I wouldn’t have known it existed.

I'll rewrite this because I think some people believe I was inferring something later on in the series, I wasn't. I was talking about what Oda was doing with his One-shots prior and what seemed to culminate into a large collection of ideas that were later on used in One Piece. Wanted was a One-shot that came out in 1994, Romance Dawn vol 1 & 2 which would eventually become the Manga-series One Piece, both those One-shots came out 1996. (If the term 'Romance Dawn' seems familiar it is because the first Chapter, Anime ep. and episode of the live-action Netflix series are all known as 'Romance Dawn' even the manga/anime up until the finale Arlong Park is also referred to as 'Romance Dawn' by the fandom.) I think it is interesting to see not the connections but ideas from MONSTERS into One Piece because 'Ryuma de King' phonates in a similar way to 'Monkey D. Luffy'—I believe what Oda had done was use many concepts from all of his (10, I think) One-shots, and the culmination of them would be injected into his very story that ended up getting serialized in SHONEN Mag. I'll say these comments shouldn't be used to speculate about the One Piece AGENDA; actually, if anything, I lean more towards de-speculating, as I don't believe these folding ideas have any meaning to the canon of One Piece. The 'de' in MONSTERS was likely Rōmaji used to best fit the phonetic sound of the word 'thee.' Perhaps, Oda just might've liked the flow of Thee over The to create name/and title; "Ryuma, THE King 'of Swordsmen'". It feels like he took what he learned from all these one-shots, and it became the series we know today, while maybe some of those small ideas could've sprouted into even bigger ideas.

Ryuma was a god-damn beast in his time. I'm so glad Oda's world is so thoroughly written that even side characters have such deep lore that ties in with the main story. From cover stories to specials, even 1000+ episodes doesn't feel like it's enough and we are spoiled by Oda. I'm so glad you ladies joined us in this epic adventure because I'm getting to vicariously relive the experience of seeing One Piece for the first time through your reactions.
