In ye olde times (aka fansub days), they put up an explainer on what he is saying, but what Tom is saying is "do things with a 'don' " where 'don' is the Japanese onomatopoeia for a boom or a drum beat. As the translation says, to them, it's 'resolutely' but I think 'with pride', 'wholeheartedly', 'with all your being' or 'don't hold anything back' are all better for getting the meaning across. Of course, they COULD just do a translation note and explain this, and then use 'don' w/o a translation, but that's just something from a bygone time that people seem to be fine without.

I think some of the crew were with Luffy when he got the news and grieved with him and then Luffy moved on to the next phase (acceptance) and expected Ussopp to suddenly jump to the same stage instead of letting him have his grief and even joining him. This makes Ussopp think, quite reasonably, that his captain is too hard hearted about losing a member of the crew and will abandon them and move on quickly because in his view, he never saw Luffy shocked and then grieving at all, just blithely accepting the next ship

Who would have thought from just a few episodes ago when Franky was beating Ussopp and taking the money for the Merry that we'd grow to actually like him and that the shipbuilders we liked and were choosing from for our crew were terrible people

2024-11-01 23:47:52 +0000 UTCAs said in the full length vid. I'll post it here because its was one of my fav parts in this arc. Leadership was a theme in this shown through Luffy and Franky. It gave us where Luffy is as a captain both his strengths and weaknesses. During the discussion about the Merry he didnt find the right words to calm Usopp down. He let his emotions explode, making it worse. It was a tough call about the Merry. Its also a captains job to not only lead, but to understand the feelings of their crew members. The arguement and fight didnt show Usopp the reality of the situation. Whereas Franky did cry over the Merry with him and even talked about the Merry as if she was a person. He even got Usopp to see the reality and severity of Merrys state. Franky knew what say and shown a more grounded emotional maturity given history with ships and people.

2024-11-01 23:09:48 +0000 UTCThe heart of Usopp and Luffy's argument underneath all the emotional clutter that lay on top of it, was whether to treat the Merry as living Nakama or as a Ship. And now that we know Usopp heard Merry speaking to him, we understand why he fought so hard, why he doesn't want to just abandon her and move on. This reveal is so much more effective after we, as the audience, have had some time away from the fight. Oda really is a brilliant storyteller.
