2024-06-16 19:40:39 +0000 UTCSo, I'm late, but Bon Clay is non binary. Even his name, which is actually Bon Kurei, is a festival in Japan. So he's a numbered agent AND a special day. He actually refers to himself with a feminine pronoun, achishi (Self pronouns are gendered in Japanese, while pronouns to refer to OTHERS are barely used.) He also ends his sentences with wa yo, which is another very feminine speech pattern in japanese. But he explicitly states that he's neither a man nor a woman, later on. He DOES identify as an Okama, which is kiiiiind of a slur in japan? It's on the same level of "queer," here, where the LGBTQ community uses it to refer to themselves so often it's lost it's bite, and can be used in a nonderogatory way even by allies.

2024-06-02 23:42:46 +0000 UTCBon Clay is one of my favorite characters from this arc. Lots of little (and not so little) details add up to a very interesting character. He is Mister 2, and he has no partner. He is both the man and the woman agent. He is, himself, a kind of duality. It's easy to look at him and see a poorly done or perhaps poorly aged caricature of nonbinary people, but I really think there is something quite beautiful here. Bon Clay is hard to nail down with simple labels, but I think describing him as bigender might be most appropriate, given my understanding of the term. He is both Man and Woman, and he embodies the ideas of masculinity and femininity within the context of manga/anime. He exhibits the typical cool guy masculine traits as well as cutesy feminine traits present in this medium at the time of his creation. He wears makeup, but doesn't shave his legs. He loves to dance but he also loves to fight. In Bon Clay, these are not competing traits. They are all a part of who he is. He takes his favorite parts of the social constructs of what it means to be masculine and feminine and combines them into a brand new identity all his own. I think his devil fruit contributes to this, or perhaps complements it well. As he is able to literally exist as both a man and a woman whenever he wants, he is able to freely experiment with his identity. If you had the power to change your gender instantly, any time you wanted, what parts of each experience would you want to keep? What would remain constant between the changes? When you can choose to be anyone that you've ever met, what would it mean to be yourself? You might find that putting on wild makeup is fun, but shaving your legs is a hassle. That singing and dancing is as fun as fighting. That wearing silly clothes with swans all over is fun because you just like swans so much. You might find that friendship is something you can stumble into at any time, and that it is a precious thing even if if is short lived. Bon Clay is very masculine AND very feminine. He shows us that these things are not exclusive of each other. I think that's a beautiful thing.

And yes it's the guy from Logue Town! I love your ideas on the show, knowing what is about to happen and eager to see your reactions to when you find out if you were right or wrong :D There are going to be some fillers soon - I've never really watched them. Has anyone done so and are they worthwile to watch?

Always manages to get me even more excited π I was wondering if you're going to watch the One Piece movies too? I'm not sure about what others think, but I really like all the movies they've done so far and I would LOVE for you to watch them (maybe even react to them if you girls are interested in doing that). ππ€
