"The Last Patrol"

Winters is legendary. Once again we just want to express our gratitude to the men and women risking their lives for ours and others safety. We will never know the full extent of their experiences!

Thanks so much for all of your love and support here on Patreon. Until the next one!

Having read both Winters book Beyond Band of Brothers, and Websters own book Parachute Infantry, this episode does not reflect how Webster was actually treated. However Webster's narration is taken straight from the book he wrote after the war.

We can't know but it's why the series & taking the time to watch is so important, lest we ever forget those men, what they did and what it meant.

Tom Hanks has a small cameo in episode 9 think you guys will spot him?

Remster

You have to watch The Pacific next.

Poor Lt. Jones would serve the Army well in the German occupation for two years, until tragically killed in a vehicle accident in 1947.

I’m really enjoying your reactions to this series. I REALLY hope you guys watch the “We Stand Alone Together” documentary at the end of this. It’s a perfect finale to the series and a lot of reactors fail to react to it. You’ll get to actually see the actual veterans and hear their stories from their own words.

CJ Smith

You guys need to be ready for Episode 9. Great reaction!

The actor that played Jones is Colin Hanks, Tom Hanks son. The last two episodes are the two emotional of the series.

I would have to concur with the others about Sgt Martin being upset that he's now leading the patrol 'no thanks to Webster'. Like they said in the beginning, they all wanted to play it safe and now he's pulled in. Glad you two are enjoying this series. Just be prepared for the next episode. You will need tissues and possibly a good support from each other. It was the toughest episode for me throughout this series. Tough but very worth it!

Regarding the West Point thing and 2nd LT Jones who tags along with Easy Company, West Point is one of the 5 federal military academies, along with the Naval Academy (ROLL GOATS BABY), the Air Force Academy, The Coast Guard Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy. To commission there are 4 ways: go to ROTC at a normal university, go to Officer Candidate School after you've graduated college, get a battlefield commission (not really a thing anymore), or go to one of those 5 federal military academies. If one is accepted into one of the academies, which as you said are very prestigious and have about a 5% acceptance rate (along with needing an endorsement from a sitting congressman to attend), we all immediately become active duty military members as students there, holding a special congressional rank of cadet or midshipman (we were ranked above enlisted but right below officers in kind of a middle ground), and then afterwards we all immediately commission on graduation day as officers into active duty, as LT Jones did in this episode. While a lot of the freshly commissioned academy grads who came in at the end of the war like LT Jones didn't get to do a whole lot, many of them would go on to serve with distinction in the Korean War. To also defend him a little, at the academies we are taught from day 1 to be soliders, sailors, marines, and airmen, fighting is really engrained in us. For someone to just come out of a university which is basically a 4 year boot camp where you're told you have to fight and win the nation's wars as the military future top officers, it's understandable that in his mind he has to see action.

They might have seen it already, but it's true

Golden Oak Leaves = Major , Silver Oak Leaves = lieutenant colonel , Winters got promoted again to Major.

So just a few things....In real life (no spoilers) from what was reported Webster was welcomed back with open arms...not quite what was shown in the series....I think Sgt. Martin was upset at Webster because maybe he heard that Webster had gotten Lt. Jones assigned as one of the members that was going across the river.....remember that Malarky had been first assigned and maybe Martin wasn't thrilled he was picked to go in his place. Cobb, who you remembered was on the replacements for wearing the Division award, at the end of the episode was taken away surrounded by the Military Police. Winters was promoted to Major at the end.

Normally don't like commenting something like this for a first time blind reaction to a show, but I'm making an exception for this. If there has EVER been an episode you need to emotionally prepare for, it's episode 9 of Band of Brothers...
