Regardless of the way Victoire managed to hear Harry’s voice while she was trapped in the illusion, the group was ready to get to the next floor, they were waiting for instructions and it seemed like their prayers had been heard.
“Travelers on an unending voyage of discovery, you have successfully passed the fourth test, the door to the next level has been unlocked!” The voice in the sky said and suddenly, the typical golden door appeared. “There’s nothing else I can say for now, so, good luck on the fifth floor!” The voice suddenly stopped.
All of them were a little wary of the door, after all, now it had a question sign, soon, everyone looked at Lucero who had a stern expression.
“What does that mean Lucero?” Asked Harry with a confused expression.
“Well, the level we’ve just completed is the farthest that my grandfather managed to complete in many of the expeditions he was part of, and it was all because the rest of his companions were dead at this point, so, this next level I’m sure is going to be a complete mystery, the symbol means that it’s a random level, but at this point, we can expect the worst, I don’t think they’re going to have mercy on us from this point onwards,” the Mexican witch said before gulping.
Everyone could tell that there was tension in the air, still, there was a question Hermione needed to ask.
“Lucero…If your grandfather’s companions died at this point…How did he manage to get back? I mean, there’s no registry of how that happened on the notebook he let us borrow,” Hermione tried to search for said information on the notebook's contents.
“Well, that’s easy Hermione…We have no idea why this place was created but our theory is that it was a place to train and create strong wizards and witches when the Mayans were at their peak, that’s why the Mayans were so strong that the Aztecs could never conquer these lands, and trust me, the Aztecs took a big part of what was Mexico back then,” Hermione was fascinated with the story.
Lucero decided to catch her breath quickly because she knew she hadn’t answered the older witch’s question.
“Well, to put things in context, the statues of the four warriors that were built on the place we made the ritual to enter inside this place, they represent the wizards who created it, and it has been the duty of their descendants to guard this place to avoid any nuisance to enter, it’s been centuries and the only descendants left are the members of my family,” The Mexican witch took a pause once again.
“Which means that…?” Charlie questioned with a curious expression.
“It means that even if I get hurt, this place cannot kill me, it has been designed in this way, my theory is that this place is like a game that the descendants of the creators have been playing for centuries, and it would be no fun if you died while playing a game, right?” Asked the honey-eyed witch with a raised brow,
As a fan of videogames, Harry now realized that this place indeed could be considered like a real-life videogame, it has many mechanics, and interesting ways to solve the riddles and puzzles, of course, considering they’re not descendants of the guardians, Harry and the rest of his British friends know they can die here.
“Well, now that I’ve explained this, I’m going to tell all of you a secret...As a descendant of the creators, the only thing I need to do to get out of here is tell the dungeon masters to end the game, and then, if all of you wanted to, you could come back with me and forget about what's next…Regardless of what you decide to do, I’m not in actual danger,” the Mexican witch said with a serious expression.
They were surprised by her sudden change in attitude but then they realized the situation they were in, the next level was going to be a mystery, they could either make history and complete all levels or they could retire and forget about their mission.
"Of course, you're going to lose the things you put as a sacrifice before entering, but at least you would be alive," Lucero added with a calm expression but it seemed like the group had already made a choice.
“No, I can’t leave, I don’t know about the rest but…We need to save our friend, Bill,” Harry said with the bravest tone possible.
“Yes, there’s no way I’ll leave Dad rotting in this place,” Victoire was sure.
“I’m with you dear niece, I won’t leave my ugly older brother here!” Charlie couldn’t help but chuckle.
“I must admit that I’m a bit scared about the enigma we're about to face but…I promised my family that I was going to try my best to bring Bill back,” Hermione couldn’t help but sigh. “So, count on me!” She declared with an expression she usually wears when she gives a speech in front of the wizengamot.
Lucero was surprised by how close they were, she was aware that the man they were searching for was Victoire’s father and Charlie’s brother but to see people like Harry and Hermione who weren’t blood-related to the man risk their own lives for him, that made her feel close to home, her family is like that, so, she couldn’t help but smile at them.
“Well, if that’s the decision you’ve all taken then, we should better get going before we lose our motivation,” Lucero smirked at them and soon, she opened the door to the next level.
They were a bit confused because the only thing they could see was a fog that covered everything.
“Well, where do we go now?” Asked Harry a bit desperate.
He hated fog, especially the one that seemed to follow him everywhere, no matter how much he moved around, the only thing he was able to see was that damn fog.
“Ah…So annoying, take this!” Harry said before he cast a spell to dissipate the fog.
But it didn’t work.
“Are you guys there?” Asked Harry with a worried tone.
“Yes, I’m here Harry,” Victoire suddenly spoke but Harry couldn’t see her.
“I’m here,” Lucero.
“Yes,” Charlie this time.
“Please, silence everyone!” Hermione ordered them.
Harry was surprised by her tone but he smirked because he knew this was good news, when Hermione uses that tone is because she’s concentrated on something which means that she seems to have caught something. They were in complete silence for Merlin knows how long.
“Pay attention guys…I can hear something…I hear the sound of water running through a river," Hermione said with a calm tone.
Harry was a bit confused but then, he took a moment to analyze the situation and to try to hear what Hermione was hearing, suddenly, his eyes widened the moment he realized that judging by the sound there was a river nearby.
“You’re a genius Mione!” Harry said with a happy tone and then he was surprised to see Hermione’s figure. “Hey!” He said in a low tone as he joined her.
“Guys, Harry’s with me, please focus on the sound and try to hear it, trust me, you need to do that if you want to see us,” Hermione told the rest of the group who mumbled in agreement.
Harry and Hermione were a bit nervous but soon, the rest of their friends started to appear, first, it was Lucero, then Victoire and in the end, it was Charlie, all of them were happy to see the rest.
“So, what do we do now guys?” Asked Charlie with a raised brow.
“We’re going to search for that river, it’s clear that whoever designed this floor wants us to get there,” Hermione said and Harry agreed.
“In that case, as an Auror, I’m an expert when it comes to survival, so, follow me please,” Harry told them with a smirk and they agreed with him.
Soon, they were moving slowly as they followed Harry but little by little Harry’s speed was increasing until he and the rest of the group were running until the fog disappeared, and without a shadow of a doubt, they seemed to have reached the river but the celebrations didn’t last for too long as they were suddenly looking at a horrific scene.
Laying on one side of the river, there were ten bodies, and all of those bodies had some kind of tattoo on their arms and Harry could recognize that symbol everywhere.
“The sectumsempra group…” Harry said in a low tone.
And even though one question has been answered, many more questions appeared in their minds.
