“Of all the people that could do this you were the last one on my list Harry Potter,” Hestia Jones said as she stood behind her desk.
She wasn’t alone, Harry and Ron were sitting in front of her and the redhead was nervous as fuck while the raven-haired man had a serious expression, it was complicated, he didn’t know how to feel about this, still he tried to downplay what happened and do some damage control.
“What are you talking about boss?” Asked Harry pretending to be ignorant about what he did.
Ignorance is bliss after all.
“You know what I’m talking about Harry James Potter…You did something you shouldn’t have done with someone under your care!” The woman was running out of patience.
Harry couldn’t blame her though, things were just like back at Hogwarts, every time there was a problem or something weird happened, somehow, Harry managed to get involved in those situations and that's something that has haunted him even to this day.
That was the reason he and Ron weren't as close as before, the redhead truly was a model Auror compared to Harry who was used to being scolded by his boss as he’s a complete loose canon who rarely follows the book.
“Well, to be honest, I wasn't her guardian when we did that, she hadn't signed the document that confirms I'm her guardian again, so..." Harry tried to justify himself but his boss didn't change her expression. "Oh right, I remembered my real crime...I’m sorry boss…I won’t attack criminals in front of the prisoner again, now if you excuse me…” Harry tried to leave but he was stopped by the woman.
“You know I’m not talking about that…You had sex with her,” the woman finally snapped and said bluntly, she didn't have the time nor the patience to deal with Harry at this moment. “Weasley told me what you two did, he saw everything,” the older woman said and soon Harry looked at his best friend who was a little nervous.
“I-I’m sorry mate but rules are rules and you’re technically under my command, so, I had to report you,” the redhead was worried about the way Harry could react after finding out what he did, he was hoping he would understand his position.
Harry could only glare at his friend, however, he couldn’t get angry at him, he was right, he has been careless, ever since he got involved with Daphne, his work ethic, his emotions, everything has been compromised and it hard for him to act logically when it comes to that amazing woman, so, in the end, he decided to sit back and wait to hear about what was going to happen to him now.
“Weasley, you’re now in charge of guarding the Greengrass prisoner, please get on to your new duties and leave us alone,” the woman said to the red-haired man.
To be honest, the redhead didn’t know how to feel, in one hand he was going to spend more time inside a home, safe and sound and he didn’t have to worry about fighting dark wizards for some time, as they already knew the reason why the magical barriers were deactivated the moment Narcissa and his group attacked the Greengrass manor.
Turns out that Narcissa manipulated with sex one of the youngest Aurors who recently joined the forces so he could manipulate the barriers but the young man managed to find a way to deactivate them as they’re constantly in maintenance, he risked everything for the older woman and now he was facing the dementor kiss as a punishment and if he gets some lucky he could be facing a life sentence in Azkaban (200 years).
He's not worried about his safety nor the prisoner’s safety now after the problem was fixed, it was so simple which clearly revealed a lack of attention to something so important, but who could go so far as to kidnap a home-arrested criminal? That’s something the ministry never considered until this day and there are going to be consequences, the security is going to become tougher.
“Okay, I'll get onto it boss…See you later Harry,” the redhead said in an apologetic tone before he left the room, Harry waved him goodbye with an assuring expression.
Now that they were alone, Harry and Hestia couldn’t help but sigh, this was a very difficult situation, he knew he had done something wrong, and he knew this was going to look bad once the press gets to know about this.
“Potter…I know that I can trust you with anything and even though I’d love to ignore what happened because it seems like you and that woman care about each other enough to pretend this didn’t happen, I’m worried about what’s going to happen if her mother realizes what happened,” the older woman couldn’t help but massage her temples.
“Yep, they could sue the ministry and get Daphne’s sentence nullified, they would be able to get a huge monetary compensation,” Harry said with a calm expression.
“Yes, I’m glad you’re aware of the things that could happen if this information gets leaked…It won’t be fair for the victims of the war and their families to see a death eater get an apology and money just because of a moment of passion, so, you need to choose Harry…” The woman hesitated a little.
She didn’t want to say these next few words but she had to do her job, she needed to follow the protocol and rules or else the minister is going to be a pain in the ass.
“You need to choose between your job and her,” the woman said with a serious tone.
And those words made Harry gulp, this was a very difficult situation for him, he loved Daphne and he also loved this job even though he was being completely restricted most of the time.
“Are you sure there’s no better solution to this boss? I mean, she’s going to get released in a few months, after that, there’s nothing that could stop us from being together, right?” Asked Harry with a desperate tone, it was rare to see him acting like that.
“No Harry…As long as you’re part of the Auror forces you cannot date a prisoner who was in your care…Can you imagine the image that will give to the general public of us? They could think we're a corrupted organization,” the woman said before sighing. “Luckily you and her didn’t spend too much time together, so, even in the remote case this information gets leaked, the damage isn't going to be too bad as long as you don't interact with her again in your life,” the older woman added and she was having lots of doubts right now.
Harry never expected to be in the position to choose between the job he loved and the woman he loved, he still wanted to fight and do something for society.
“Boss…I’m sure people won’t care if I date her after she finishes her sentence—” Harry tried to argue but he was stopped by the older woman who slammed her hands on the desk.
“That’s just speculation and you and I both know that something like that doesn’t work in a trial and I’m not willing to speculate about future imaginary scenarios…Harry, even if you date her after she gets released, the department’s reputation, your reputation, and most importantly…Her reputation will be tainted, you care about her, right? If that’s the case then you can see that your idea doesn't make any sense,” the woman couldn’t help but sigh this was far more difficult than she thought it would be.
And he wasn’t the only one facing a tough battle against the politics of the Auror department, Daphne was as unhappy as Harry now that she had a new guard.
“And that’s why I’m going to be your new guard, please sign here,” Ron gave the blonde a paper to sign.
It’s been a few minutes since he arrived and she hasn’t stopped ranting ever since then, she keeps demanding for Harry to be here, but this time it seems like she accepted her fate and she was about to sign the paper when suddenly they heard a knock on the door that Ron quickly attended.
“Oh for fuck’s sake,” he said as he opened the door. “Harry, you know you can’t be here—” Ron was quickly stopped.
“Of course I can be here, how else I’m going to see my girlfriend and work on her garden? Don't worry about it Ron, I quit the Auror forces,” Harry said with a smirk.
Daphne and Ron’s eyes widened after hearing that, they knew of the love he had for his job even if it looked like he hated it.
