Andy couldn’t believe it, a long time had passed since he played for a live audience and this brought many amazing and painful memories about what he did when he was younger, and even though he loved music, this was the thing that made the relationship between him and his parents worse than it already was and he couldn't blame them for reacting like that after what he did but he has no regrets.
You see, Andy and his parents have never had a good relationship and it took a long time for the younger man to realize that it wasn’t his fault, after all, his parents didn’t get along with his grandparents which caused him to have a stranded relationship with his relatives, and while his friends were celebrating Christmas with their loved ones there was nothing for him.
No gifts, no celebrations, and no good food, nothing for him as his parents took their atheism seriously, but everything changed when he met his friend, Pete, they bonded over trading cards one day when Andy found a rare Yugioh card in the playground that he was planning to sell and become rich (he thought he was going to be rich by having ten dollars)
However, Pete suddenly appeared and corrected him by tearing the card apart in front of him, however, Andy would forever be thankful he did that because Pete told him that the card he found was fake, and seeing the disappointed expression on Andy’s face made Pete feel bad for him, so, instead of mocking him and humiliate him, he gave Andy not only an original copy of the card her broke but he gave him three and to this day Andy keeps those cards sealed and protected, that’s his life insurance as the last time he checked out, one of those cards was sold for one thousand dollars, so, he was hopeful the card would only go higher with time.
Pete became his new friend, the guy was new in the town and he needed someone to show him the town and there was no better person fit for that job than Andy, he was always playing outside and getting in trouble, so he knew the town very well, and it didn’t take too long for them to become friends and that’s the moment Andy’s life changed forever because Pete's family was loaded with money.
They always got Pete everything he wanted, that’s why he’s currently studying in an important college now without worrying about student loans, his family is so good that they even offered Andy the chance to go too with the promise of paying them the loan in the future without interest rate but Andy was too proud and arrogant to accept their proposal, and knowing himself, he didn't want money to ruin the trust and relationship he had with Pete's family, also, Andy has a dream after all.
And the ones that had to be blamed for Andy having that dream are Pete and his family, not because he was jealous of their wealth but because he always benefited from being friends with Pete, he had more fun with Pete’s family than with his own and they invited him to their parties, Christmas, everything and he was treated like another member of their family.
That’s why the day Pete had to start his piano lessons, Andy had to join him too, and that’s the moment everything changed for Andy because that's the moment he saw a piano for the first time, it was like he found the place where he belonged, that first day of piano lessons they had to wait for their teacher and they had to learn music theory before even touching the instrument.
But Andy felt something trapping him, attracting him towards the piano like a magnet, he was moving on his own and he wasn’t even worried if his teacher could get angry about what he was going to do but he did it, he played a note and then, he improvised a melody at the moment, it was quite simple but it was enough to surprise Pete and the teacher because for someone without any musical background, for him to do that was quite impressive.
Thanks to that experience, music became his passion, an escape from all the bad things in his life, and he managed to keep that secret for a long time until his teacher decided to visit him at his home to propose something to his parents…She wanted him to play at a charity event.
Of course, his parents were shocked and angry, they completely turned down his teacher’s proposal, it took Andy some time to realize why his parents were so unwilling to let him do that…They were jealous of his success, he heard them saying that when they were arguing, they hated knowing that they had nothing to do with his talent as his mother’s family were farmers, a valuable profession but it had nothing to do with music and his father's side was no better even though they used to be wealthy but his Andy's grandfather gambling addiction ruined the whole family.
That talent, it was his, it was no one else’s, he was born with it and they were trying to sabotage him, however, Andy instead of crying and feeling like a victim, decided to do something more drastic after reading about the story of Mozart, he decided to take advantage of his parents’ ignorance, he was going to make them believe they could live through him.
You see, Mozart was a child prodigy who was already touring and playing for important people like popes and kings, his parents obviously were very lucky and they didn’t hesitate to make money off his talent, so, Andy made his parents believe he was a child prodigy and he made them believe they could make money with his talent, however, because he wasn't that young he made them believe that he was going to become a professional performer once he became an adult, so, he was going to need to practice until then.
His parents still hated the fact that he was better than them, however, the idea of quitting their jobs in the future and making money off their unwanted son was an idea they didn’t dislike, so, they accepted Andy’s talent even if they hated it, but the promise of great fortune made them feel more accepting.
However, Andy already had an idea of what he wanted to do with his life, you see, when Andy says Pete had everything he truly meant it, Pete had his private arcade room and there was an interesting section, the rhythm game section had DDR, pump it up, DJMAX Technika, Beatmania and many other rhythm games that were about stomping your feet or pressing fingers on a bunch of buttons at the rhythm of amazing music.
That’s the moment Andy got to know about rhythm game music, and he was completely fascinated, it reminded him of classical music but with a modern twist and that was the perfect balance Andy had been searching for his whole life, he wanted to make music like that so, he investigated and he got to know about the Artcore genre.
He wanted to become like all those artists, he wanted to make complex electronic music, so, he convinced his parents to get him a five thousand dollar PC but that was just the start, then he bought expensive music production courses, expensive virtual synthesizers, expensive samples, everything he wanted and it was so easy for him to convince his parents to invest in something they would eventually see a return (spoiler alert: they got nothing)
Andy managed to keep that act and he managed to scam his parents until he was sixteen when he finally produced the first song he felt proud of, however, that’s when reality hit him, not only people weren’t interested in listening to his music even though he put lots of efforts into it, but his parents realized that he had been scamming them.
Andy managed to win a few music contests throughout the years with some economic prizes (not so big) and that made his parents feel hopeful that he would find people interested in his talent to perform, however, it was going to be hard to become a classical performer outside of Europe and even though Andy worked so hard on his music (which made him lower his grades and GPA) he was still an average classical performer.
His parents realized that they had been wasting time and money with him and to say that they were furious would be the understatement of the century, even though Andy was used to their cold attitude they became worse, and they didn’t waste time to insult him every time they had the chance to do it, but Andy felt they were right to do that and yet, he had no regrets about it.
However, seeing all these powerful and rich people standing around him completely awed clapping at him and cheering at him, even though his parents thought his talent was a waste of time and money, ironically, this was going to be the thing that was going to make his life easier.
He knew his life was going to change the moment he started to hear some of them asking him to play at their parties, their meetings, and he even heard some that wanted to commission him some original music after hearing his improvisation, ironically, what his parents saw as a waste of time and money was going to be the thing that was going to make him get to the top, he felt powerful, he managed to get the last laugh.
