It seems to me that Eric has a hard time putting himself in the characters shoes and has a difficulty separating himself and his believes from the characters. It's like he is forcing them to step in his shoes and filter them trough his believes rather than accepting them for who they are. For example there was no need to interpret the meaning of love to understand the priest, as he literally in that scene interprets it for himself, all you have to do is accept the character for who he is. No hate or anything, I just find it interesting that someone that experiences so many works of fiction, often has a hard time understanding characters that don't fit their mold.
