I feel like his body is dead for now, but he may be "alive" in the shadow world, and maybe there could be someway at the end after defeating Eclipso they use the gem to power up the shade and he could take physical form again, but I am not getting my hopes up because this show has kept on screen deaths pretty permanent so far.

He could be pulling a Loki & making it seem like he died while doing something good so 1. No one looks for him & 2. They actually spread the word that he died doing a selfless act. If we don't see him again, I won't mind that he actually did die doing something good, but will be sad he won't be coming back 'cause I love the character.
