From the tweets from the authors, it seems like it was the "plan" all along. In the books, there is a rather large timeskip between books 6 and 7, so it would be a likely place to stop. Also, it is speculated that they are working on other media for Expanse, like movie deals and games.

But they're giving them advanced notice. Now the writers know how many episodes are left and they can (hopefully) give us a story that gives us a proper ending. I know there are more books, but after seeing so many shows get cancelled without warning and leaving open storylines... having a way to give us closure is so rare these days.

Big news just announced about the Expanse. It's been renewed for a 6th season, which will also be it's last. You guys should be caught up with season 5 with time to spare by the time it's released.

I can't wait for all 4 of you to watch the additional 10 episodes of Dexter! Just be prepared. He will die. IMO MCH doesn't want to answer the question "will there be more of Dexter?" ever again. He will insist that he will die to put it behind him. Mark my words :(

About Dexter. Y'all missed the most important line because you were discussing the previous scene, but Dexter is on the balcony outside of his apt. and thinks "For so long I wanted to be just like everyone else, feel the same feelings. Now, I would give anything to make it all go away". He is in such pain (feeling) over Debra. That's the whole show. He became more and more human, but now is suffering the loss as a human. Also, the producers were told by Showtime to keep the ending open for any future episodes because it was their cash cow at the time. Now, finally, after 7 years we are getting a 9th season which will have MCH along with the original showrunner from seasons 1-4 to get things right, hopefully, cause fans were in an uproar over the ending. I kind of understood it. He put himself in exile all alone.

I just started Mr Robot with another reactor, FailWhale. I'm just a couple episodes ahead of him (into season 2), got me hooked, and I'm trying soooo hard not to binge too far ahead. All that being said, Expanse is good... give it a go !
